Is J. M. Smucker Stock Outperforming the S&P 500?

With a market cap of $13.1 billion, The J. M. Smucker Company (SJM) is a leading North American food and pet food company with a diverse portfolio of trusted consumer brands. Its products span coffee, peanut butter, fruit spreads, frozen handhelds, sweet baked goods, dog snacks, and cat food, including Folgers, Dunkin’, Jif, Uncrustables, Hostess, Milk-Bone, and Meow Mix. 

Companies valued at $10 billion or more are generally classified as “large-cap” stocks, and J. M. Smucker fits this criterion perfectly. The company focuses on delivering quality products, operating responsibly and ethically, and creating long-term growth while making a positive impact on society.

Shares of the Orrville, Ohio-based company have pulled back 8.8% from its 52-week high of $135.89. The stock has risen 10.4% over the past three months, outpacing the broader S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) 4.4% gain over the same time frame.

SJM stock has increased nearly 26% on a YTD basis, outperforming the SPX’s 12.2% rise. However, shares of the Folgers coffee maker have soared 11.7% over the past 52 weeks, lagging behind the 15.7% return of the SPX over the same time frame.

Yet, the stock has been trading above its 200-day moving average since June.

J.M. Smucker shares rose 4.3% on Aug. 26 after the company reported Q1 2027 net sales of $2.22 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.24, ahead of the estimates. The company also raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to $10.50 - $11 and narrowed its expected annual sales decline to 1% - 2%. Steady demand for coffee and ready-to-eat meals, along with $115 million in tariff refunds that lifted quarterly gross profit to $504.9 million, further supported the stronger outlook.

In comparison, rival General Mills, Inc. (GIS) has lagged behind SJM stock. GIS stock has decreased 24.1% on a YTD basis and 30.9% over the past 52 weeks. 

Despite the stock’s outperformance on a YTD basis, analysts are cautiously optimistic about its prospects. SJM stock has a consensus rating of “Moderate Buy” from the 18 analysts covering the stock, and the mean price target of $141.12 is a premium of nearly 14% to current levels.
