Kroger Stock: Is Wall Street Bullish or Bearish?

The Kroger Co. (KR), headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates supermarkets, multi-department stores, and fulfillment centers. Valued at $40.7 billion by market cap, the company offers meat, seafood, bakery, dairy, frozen, cleaning, kitchen, beverages, health, electronics, toys, vegetables, fruits, beauty, and household products.

Shares of this supermarket chain have outperformed the broader market over the past year. KR has gained 9.9% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 8.2%. In 2026, KR stock is up 11.1%, surpassing the SPX’s 7.4% rise on a YTD basis.

Narrowing the focus, KR’s underperformance is apparent compared to the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK). The exchange-traded fund has gained about 18.9% over the past year. Moreover, the ETF’s 18.3% returns on a YTD basis outshine KR’s gains over the same time frame.

Kroger’s mixed performance stems from a tug-of-war between strong internal growth drivers and persistent operational headwinds. On the positive side, the company capitalized on booming digital demand, with surging ecommerce and retail media revenue, alongside record-high on-shelf availability, robust private label penetration, and disciplined cost savings. However, these gains were partially offset by category-specific pressures, including a cyclospora outbreak that dented produce sales, lower drug pricing in the pharmacy segment, and anticipated fuel headwinds. Management successfully navigated these challenges by leaning into operational flexibility and value investments, positioning the business for sustained profitability.

For the current fiscal year, ending in January 2027, analysts expect KR’s EPS to grow 7.2% to $5.20 on a diluted basis. The company’s earnings surprise history is mixed. It beat the consensus estimates in three of the last four quarters while missing the forecast on another occasion.

Among the 21 analysts covering KR stock, the consensus is a “Moderate Buy.” That’s based on 12 “Strong Buy” ratings, and nine “Holds.”

On Oct. 21, Deutsche Bank Aktiengesellschaft (DB) analyst Krisztina Katai kept a “Buy” rating and raised the price target to $70, implying a marginal potential upside from current levels.

The mean price target of $70.09 represents a 1% premium to KR’s current price levels. The Street-high price target of $85 suggests a notable upside potential of 22.4%.
