Can Energy Fuels' Liquidity Support Its Ambitious Growth Plans?

Energy Fuels UUUU is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy focused on uranium and  rare earth elements (REEs). While the company’s latest financial results highlight a strong liquidity position, elevated spending on expansion projects could continue to weigh on cash flows in the near term.

As of June 30, 2026, Energy Fuels had $996 million in working capital, up from $927.4 million as of Dec. 31, 2025. This included $58.4 million of cash and cash equivalents and $878.3 million of marketable securities. UUUU also held approximately 1.64 million pounds of finished uranium and 905,000 pounds of finished vanadium inventory. Management expects its available resources to be sufficient to fund its business plan for at least the next 12 months.

Energy Fuels made progress in reducing its operating cash burn in the first half of 2026. Net cash used in operating activities declined to $17.8 million from $44.8 million in the year-ago period, primarily due to higher uranium sales receipts and lower asset-retirement obligations.

At the same time, the company continued to deploy significant capital toward its growth initiatives. Net cash used in investing activities increased to $133.3 million from $75.2 million, reflecting higher investments in marketable securities, equipment and mineral properties, as well as contributions to the Donald Project joint venture.

Energy Fuels also received a conditional $725 million financing commitment from the U.S. Office of Strategic Capital in June. The proposed 20-year loan would support the expansion of critical minerals processing at the White Mesa Mill and a planned U.S. rare earth metals and alloys facility, subject to customary conditions and approvals.

Peers Also Face Significant Capital Requirements

Energy Fuels’ peer in the rare earths space, MP Materials MP, generated $4.9 million of operating cash flow in the first half of 2026 against an outflow of $66.9 million in the year-ago period. However, the company significantly increased its growth investments, spending $307.7 million on property, plant and equipment, up from $59.5 million in the first half of 2025. MP Materials ended the period with $429.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash.

Among uranium peers, Centrus Energy LEU reported $16.7 million of operating cash outflow in the first half of 2026 against $89.3 million of operating cash inflow in the year-ago period. The decline primarily reflected approximately $247.3 million of operating disbursements, including $182.3 million related to low enriched uranium inventory deliveries and cash outflows from its Technical Solutions segment.

These outflows were partly offset by approximately $230 million of customer collections and investment income. Centrus Energy’s capital expenditures surged to $94.8 million in the first half of 2026 from $5.7 million in the year-ago period. Centrus Energy had cash and cash equivalents of $1.87 billion as of June 30, 2026, compared with $1.96 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025.
