Volkswagen Q3 Deliveries Fall 14.3% as China Sales Slump

Volkswagen VWAGY is facing mounting pressure from intensifying competition in China, uneven regional demand and the shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). The Germany-based automaker is working to improve its competitiveness and strengthen its product lineup, but weakness in its largest market continues to weigh on global sales.

On Oct. 12, Volkswagen reported a 14.3% year-over-year decline in global vehicle deliveries to 1.89 million units in the third quarter of 2026, marking its steepest fall since the second quarter of 2022, per Reuters. Deliveries in China plunged 38.5%, while volumes fell 5.8% in North America and 2.8% in Western Europe. Central and Eastern Europe provided some relief, with deliveries rising 1.4%.

VWAGY Faces Mounting Pressure in China

China remains Volkswagen’s biggest challenge, as local automakers intensify competition through expanding EV lineups and competitive pricing. Deliveries in the country fell 30.2% in the first nine months of 2026, underscoring the pressure on Volkswagen’s recovery efforts. Management acknowledged that the sharp contraction in China’s overall automotive market remains an industry-wide challenge.

The pressure is also affecting other global automakers, although their performance varies by market. Toyota TM has faced a 23% year-over-year decline in sales in China in August 2026 amid intensifying competition from domestic brands, while General Motors GM is taking a different path, with its latest third-quarter results showing solid sales of 358,000 vehicles in China following product launches and restructuring efforts. Meanwhile, Stellantis N.V. STLA faces competitive pressures as it works to strengthen its position in Europe, where affordability and access to new EV models are becoming increasingly important.

Volkswagen’s EV Growth Fails to Offset Overall Weakness

Volkswagen’s battery EV deliveries declined approximately 5% year over year in the third quarter, despite a nearly 20% increase in Europe, per Reuters. The contrasting trends show that stronger European demand has not been enough to offset weakness in China, where domestic manufacturers continue to challenge established brands.

Going forward, Volkswagen’s recovery will depend on its ability to strengthen its EV lineup, adapt products to local preferences and manage pricing pressure. While Europe offers some support, a sustained improvement in Chinese demand will be crucial to restoring global delivery growth and easing pressure on the automaker’s performance.
