KALU Q3 Earnings Call Highlights Demand Strength & Margin Pressure

Kaiser Aluminum Corporation KALU emphasized improving demand visibility into 2027 during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, even as metal-related headwinds and operational disruptions pressured profitability.

Management maintained its annual outlook but expects adjusted EBITDA growth near the lower end of its guidance. Executives highlighted strengthening aerospace demand, improving product mix and the need to restore operational efficiencies.

KALU Maintains Outlook Despite Earnings Pressure

Kaiser reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted EBITDA growth guidance of 45-55%, although management expects results closer to the lower end.

Chairman, president and CEO Keith Harvey cited planned outages, execution challenges, customer inventory adjustments and unfavorable metal-related dynamics.

Adjusted earnings of $1.89 per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.08. Revenues of $1.21 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.19 billion.

Kaiser Details Metal & Operational Headwinds

Executive vice president and CFO Neal West reported adjusted EBITDA of $84 million, compared with $81 million a year earlier.

A $29-million unfavorable year-over-year swing in metal price lag weighed on profitability. Lower scrap utilization, tighter scrap spreads and facility disruptions also affected margins.

During questioning from KeyBanc and Wells Fargo analysts, Harvey acknowledged execution difficulties at Bellwood while explaining that furnace outages increased reliance on higher-cost metal inputs. He distinguished these operational challenges from external metal-price movements.

KALU Sees Aerospace Demand Accelerating

Aerospace and high-strength conversion revenues increased 31% year over year to approximately $131 million, supported by shipment growth of 42%.

Harvey said that commercial aerospace destocking has ended from Kaiser's perspective. Customer discussions increasingly involve production ramp-ups, longer-term supply commitments and additional capacity.

Responding to JPMorgan's questions, Harvey highlighted particularly strong opportunities across defense, business jets and space. He emphasized that accommodating accelerating customer requirements is becoming a central operational priority.

Kaiser Cuts Packaging Shipment Growth Forecast

Packaging conversion revenues increased 31% to $180 million as demand shifted toward higher-value coated products.

Management reduced its full-year packaging shipment growth outlook to 5-10% from 10-15%. Customer inventory adjustments and declining aluminum prices contributed to the revision.

Addressing JPMorgan's concerns about another prolonged inventory correction, Harvey emphasized that long-term demand remains intact. Contract resets, coated-product qualifications and improved product mix continue supporting conversion revenue expectations.

KALU Highlights Engineering Strength & Automotive Disruption

General engineering conversion revenues increased 21% to $99 million, supported by semiconductor-related demand and service-center restocking.

Harvey described extrusion markets as exceptionally tight, with extended lead times supporting pricing. General engineering conversion revenues per pound reached a record $1.47.

Automotive shipments declined 15% amid the Bellwood outage. Management revised its full-year shipment outlook to a decline of 5-10%, while maintaining conversion revenue expectations. Bellwood investments remain focused on expanding aluminum driveshaft capacity.

Kaiser Raises Cash Flow Expectations

West hiked the company's full-year free cash flow outlook to more than $200 million after generating $72 million in the third quarter.

Management expects $130 million in capital expenditure for 2026. Net debt leverage improved to 2 times from 3.4 times at the end of 2025.

Liquidity reached $687 million, providing financial flexibility for growth investments. West also highlighted Moody's credit rating upgrade to Ba3 with a stable outlook and the quarterly dividend of 77 cents per share.

KALU Expects Operational Recovery Into 2027

During UBS's questioning, Harvey indicated that most second-half operational headwinds should not carry into 2027, although Bellwood investments will continue.

Incoming President and CEO Fred Stephan, who will assume leadership on Nov. 1, emphasized strategic continuity and plans to engage with employees, customers and suppliers.

Management's focus remains on improving efficiency, supporting customer growth and completing investments as demand strengthens across major end markets.
