Can ATI Leverage Strong Cash Generation to Strengthen Returns?

ATI Inc. ATI remains focused on enhancing shareholder value by strengthening and sustaining its cash flow generation. It reported adjusted free cash flow of $222.8 million for the year-to-date period ended Sept. 27, 2026, up 49% from the prior-year period.

ATI is taking steps to reduce seasonality and improve the consistency of its cash flows. Higher adjusted EBITDA and improved operating performance are supporting strong free cash flow generation, with healthy aerospace and defense demand expected to sustain cash generation.

The company retained its adjusted free cash flow forecast of $550-$600 million for 2026. It raised its adjusted EBITDA guidance to $1.19-$1.2 billion from the previous range of $1.135-$1.185 billion. The stronger outlook is backed by sustained demand supported by long-term agreements, differentiated manufacturing capabilities and disciplined operational execution.

Debt reduction, aided by stronger margins and improved cash flows, is enhancing ATI’s financial flexibility. The company also remains committed to returning capital to its shareholders through share repurchases, supported by disciplined and strategic capital allocation.

ATI considers buybacks the most efficient way to return capital to shareholders. It returned $470 million to its shareholders in 2025 in the form of share repurchases. Following the $70 million repurchase in the third quarter, ATI has $425 million remaining under its current buyback authorization.

Among its major peers, Carpenter Technology Corporation CRS generated a higher adjusted free cash flow of $362.3 million for fiscal 2026 compared with $287.5 million in fiscal 2025. CRS’ cash flow from operating activities increased to $53 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 from $39 million in the year-ago quarter. Free cash flow was negative $24.8 million compared with negative $3.4 million a year earlier, reflecting higher capital expenditures. For fiscal 2027, Carpenter Technology expects to generate adjusted free cash flow in the range of $400 million to $430 million.

Howmet Aerospace Inc. HWM generated $709 million in cash from operations during the third quarter, up 34% year over year. HWM’s free cash flow was $562 million, up 33% year over year. Howmet Aerospace expects full-year 2026 free cash flow to be in the range of $1.95-$2.05 billion.
