Financial position and liquidity

  • At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $266.2 million, restricted cash $4.4 million, and short-term investments $9.8 million; cash, cash equivalents and investments totaled $276.0 million.
  • Working capital was $824.0 million, versus $793.9 million at year-end 2023. Inventory increased to $429.4 million from $389.8 million.
  • Short-term credit-line borrowings were $48.9 million; total long-term debt was $20.9 million, including $1.3 million current. The $225 million revolving credit facility had no outstanding balance, and foreign facilities had about $103.7 million of unused availability.
  • Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash decreased $47.9 million during the quarter. Operating cash use reflected working-capital movements, including increased receivables and inventory. Capital expenditures were 6.7% of sales.

Drivers, commentary and outlook

  • Management attributed the sales decline to slower-than-expected recovery in consumer, computing and communications, first-quarter seasonality around Chinese New Year, and inventory adjustments and softness in some industrial and automotive areas. Late in the quarter, demand showed signs of improvement and distributor inventories began to stabilize.
  • Weighted-average selling price declined 27.6% year over year; average unit cost declined approximately 16.9%. Lower factory loading, including at internal facilities and under manufacturing service agreements, weighed on gross margin.
  • Management expects 2024 capital expenditures to be 5%–9% of net sales and believes cash, operating cash flow and available credit will cover working capital, capital expenditures and acquisitions for at least the next 12 months. No specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
  • A $4.9 million gain on disposal of fixed assets benefited operating results. Higher interest income and a foreign-currency gain also contributed to other income; the prior-year investment gain was not repeated at a similar level.
  • Key risks include semiconductor cyclicality and weak demand, pricing pressure, order cancellations, production or supplier disruptions, foreign-exchange and variable-rate exposure, and international and tax risks. The company reported no material changes to its previously disclosed risk factors and no litigation it considers material.

Other items and investor verification

  • Purchase commitments included approximately $23.5 million for capital expenditures and $40.2 million for wafers scheduled through 2025. The U.K. defined-benefit plan was underfunded by approximately $10.1 million.
  • One customer, a broad-based global distributor, represented 14.2% of Q1 sales; one customer represented 17.3% of receivables at quarter-end.
  • Verify the pace of demand recovery and distributor inventory normalization; whether margins improve as facility utilization recovers; inventory levels and operating cash conversion; progress toward the stated capital-spending range; and the impact of currency, interest rates, and customer concentration.
