Material changes versus comparable periods
- Net income rose $0.437 million, or 113.2%, year over year. Management attributed the improvement primarily to a $0.743 million increase in net interest income after provision, partly offset by higher noninterest expense and taxes.
- Net interest income increased 20.6%, supported by loan growth: average net loans, including loans held for sale, rose 26.4% year over year to $428.4 million. The average loan yield increased 5 basis points to 4.73%.
- Interest expense increased 49.7% to $0.750 million, principally reflecting higher average borrowings and the $10 million subordinated-note issuance completed in June 2015. Total noninterest expense rose 2.9% to $6.548 million, mainly due to salaries and mortgage commissions.
- From year-end, net loans grew 3.8%; commercial real estate loans increased $26.5 million, partly offset by lower residential mortgage and construction balances. Commercial real estate was 45.9% of the loan portfolio at quarter-end.
- Deposits increased 2.3%, with noninterest checking up $13.3 million. Nonperforming loans declined to $2.335 million from $2.548 million; nonperforming assets fell to $2.941 million from $3.143 million. The allowance was $3.940 million, or 168.74% of nonperforming loans.
Outlook, commentary, risks, and unusual items
- No numerical earnings or financial guidance is provided. Management describes a continuing focus on growing loans and deposits, improving net interest margin and fee income, and controlling expenses. It anticipates future cost savings from the core systems conversion completed in 2015.
- Management identifies funding balance-sheet growth efficiently as a challenge, citing deposit competition and the possibility that customers shift funds to other asset classes. Mortgage-sale gains and servicing income are important sources of noninterest revenue and may be affected by mortgage activity.
- Interest-rate changes may pressure margins or the fair value of financial instruments. The Bank’s February 2016 sensitivity analysis showed estimated Year 1 net interest income down 0.47% under a 200-basis-point rate increase and down 1.49% under a 100-basis-point decrease; both were within the stated 15% policy limit. The filing also reports a 2.6% increase in economic value of equity under a 200-basis-point increase.
- Other disclosed risks include borrower repayment and collateral values, real-estate market conditions, credit-loss estimates, regulatory changes, competition, cybersecurity and technology resilience, and successful integration or execution of growth opportunities. Management reported no material changes to the risk factors in its 2015 Form 10-K.
- Unrealized securities losses were considered temporary; management reported no expected credit losses on the securities and no impairment charge. Net unrealized gains contributed to a $0.668 million increase in accumulated other comprehensive income during the quarter.
- The quarter’s provision for loan losses increased to support loan growth. The filing cautions that interim results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results. No material pending legal proceedings were reported; ordinary-course matters were described as nonmaterial.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether commercial real estate concentration and rapid loan growth remain consistent with underwriting standards and risk appetite.
- Future credit quality, charge-offs, delinquencies, allowance adequacy, and the evolution of the $0.710 million in loans at least 90 days delinquent but still accruing.
- Whether deposit growth can fund loan expansion without materially increasing funding costs or reliance on borrowings.
- Whether net interest margin, mortgage production and gains on loan sales, and core expense trends support earnings beyond this quarter.
- The Bank’s liquidity position and regulatory capital under changing rates and economic conditions; the filing gives internal liquidity compliance but not the actual liquidity ratios.
- Potential effects of securities valuations, interest-rate movements, and adoption of accounting standards identified as under evaluation.
