Changes versus prior periods
- Net income declined 9% year over year, while diluted EPS fell from $0.71 to $0.64. Management attributed the decline principally to lower net interest income as higher deposit costs compressed margins.
- Net interest income decreased 8% year over year. Loan yields improved, but funding costs rose; the reported cost of funds increased to 1.67% from 0.84%.
- Non-interest income rose 6%, largely from wealth management fees, up 27%. Insurance revenue declined 8%, partly reflecting lower contingency revenue.
- Non-interest expense declined 2%, mainly due to lower salaries and employee benefits and intangible amortization.
- Loans were nearly unchanged from year-end: CRE and retail growth was offset by seasonal agricultural and lower commercial and industrial line utilization. Deposits declined $33.6 million, which management linked mainly to delayed seasonal public-fund outflows.
- Shareholders’ equity decreased $8.3 million, primarily because of a $19.9 million after-tax decline in accumulated other comprehensive income associated with available-for-sale securities.
Credit, liquidity, risks, and outlook
- The allowance for loan losses was $43.8 million, or 1.10% of period-end loans, essentially unchanged from year-end. Q1 provision was $0.9 million; net charge-offs were $0.9 million, or 9 basis points of average loans on an annualized basis.
- Nonperforming assets increased to $10.0 million from $9.2 million, equal to 0.16% of assets. Nonperforming loans were 0.25% of loans versus 0.23% at year-end. Management attributed modest C&I and CRE increases to two relationships, each under $1.0 million.
- Available-for-sale securities had $300.0 million of gross unrealized losses at quarter-end, primarily attributed to market interest-rate changes; the company reported no credit-loss allowance on these securities. Management said portfolio cash flows are expected to provide approximately $190 million over the next 12 months, assuming unchanged rates.
- Management described the deposit base as diverse, with non-interest-bearing deposits at 28% of deposits and uninsured and uncollateralized deposits at approximately 21%. Funding access included approximately $220 million of remaining FHLB borrowing capacity and $186 million of Federal Reserve borrowing capacity, subject to available collateral.
- The filing provides no specific earnings or margin guidance. Management identifies interest rates, inflation and economic conditions, deposit competition and liquidity, credit quality, financial-market conditions, cybersecurity, regulation, and deposit-insurance costs among risks that could affect results. Interest-rate sensitivity modeling estimates a 0.55% decline in next-12-month net interest income under an immediate sustained 2% rate increase and a 2.66% decline under a 2% decrease; the company cautions that model assumptions and actual outcomes may differ.
- No material changes to previously disclosed risk factors were reported. The filing states there are no material pending legal proceedings beyond routine litigation. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective, with no material Q1 change in internal control over financial reporting.
