Material changes versus prior comparable periods
- Q2 sales grew 22.3% year over year; six-month sales grew 19.7%. Materials processing generated 95.5% of Q2 sales and 95.9% of first-half sales.
- Q2 attributable net income rose 27.0%; first-half attributable net income rose 33.6%. First-half diluted EPS increased to $2.22 from $1.68.
- Growth was led by high-power CW lasers and QCW lasers. Q2 sales of QCW lasers increased 94.6%; first-half sales increased 88.1%. Pulsed laser sales were nearly flat in both comparisons.
- Gross margin improved by 0.5 percentage points in Q2 and 1.2 points for the first half. Management cited product mix, lower component costs and manufacturing leverage, partly offset by higher inventory and warranty provisions.
- First-half operating cash flow increased $24.5m, while accounts receivable and inventory uses of cash rose to $31.7m and $33.2m, respectively.
Outlook, commentary, risks and unusual items
- Management expected 2015 capital expenditures, excluding acquisitions, of $60m–$65m to expand and upgrade global facilities. It provided no specific full-year revenue or earnings guidance.
- IPG attributed demand gains to wider fiber-laser adoption, including applications in cutting, welding, 3D manufacturing, consumer electronics and medical uses. It plans continued R&D investment in new wavelengths, pulsed lasers, systems and manufacturing efficiency.
- Currency movements were significant: management estimated that, at prior-year exchange rates, Q2 sales and gross profit would have been $19.7m and $9.9m higher, respectively; first-half figures would have been $41.3m and $20.7m higher. The company recorded a $3.2m Q2 foreign-exchange loss but a $5.6m first-half gain. First-half currency translation reduced other comprehensive income by $27.1m.
- Customer concentration remains relevant: the five largest customers represented 24% of first-half sales, and the largest customer represented 11%. Management noted that a substantial reduction in purchases by a major customer could adversely affect results.
- Inventory was $190.8m at quarter-end, up from $171.0m at year-end. Management expects to maintain comparatively high inventory to support growth, short delivery times and manufacturing continuity. Inventory provisions were $7.0m for the first half; warranty reserves rose to $23.3m from $19.3m at year-end.
- In Q1, IPG acquired a 76% interest in RukhTekh LLC for $5.0m. The preliminary purchase-price allocation included $6.3m of purchased technology intangibles and $0.1m of goodwill; the allocation remained subject to adjustment.
- The U.S. long-term note matured and was paid in June. The U.S. revolving credit commitment was increased from $35m to $50m and extended to April 2020. Management reported no legal proceedings expected to have a material financial effect and stated disclosure controls were effective.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether sales growth and margin improvement persist, particularly in high-power and QCW products and amid changing product and customer mix.
- How foreign-exchange movements affect reported sales, margins, cash and translation adjustments; IPG had no foreign-currency derivative hedges at June 30.
- Whether receivables and inventory convert to cash as expected, and whether inventory or warranty provisions increase.
- Execution and returns from the RukhTekh acquisition and the planned $60m–$65m 2015 capital expenditure program.
- Ongoing customer concentration, major-customer demand and compliance with debt covenants.
