Material changes and drivers

  • Net income rose 34.5%. Higher net interest income reflected loan and earning-asset growth and lower funding costs, partly offset by lower asset yields and a lower net interest margin.
  • Provision for loan losses increased to $0.645 from $0.421. Net charge-offs were $0.405, or 0.36% of average loans, versus $0.165, or 0.17%, in Q1 2011.
  • Noninterest income increased 50.4%, including a $0.284 gain on securities sales, compared with $0.010 in Q1 2011. Noninterest expense decreased 2.4%; lower other expenses included $0.353 of insurance proceeds reimbursing prior-year flood expenses and $0.082 of lower FDIC premiums and examination fees, while salaries and occupancy costs increased.
  • Income tax expense was $0.514, with a 17.5% effective rate versus 20.6%; management attributed the lower rate to investment tax credits related to an elderly-housing investment.
  • Loans grew, led by commercial and commercial real estate lending. Securities declined 5.0% to $132.882, reflecting sales and mortgage-backed security repayments; management said sales also supported tax planning and reduced interest-rate exposure.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

  • No specific earnings or financial guidance was provided. Management said liquidity was adequate and expected current funding sources to meet obligations, while noting results for the quarter are not necessarily indicative of future performance.
  • Management cited persistent low interest rates, competition, economic and employment weakness, higher food and energy costs, and credit, funding-cost and regulatory risks. It reported that modeled net interest income could increase 0.6% under an immediate parallel +200-basis-point shock and decrease 18.0% under a -200-basis-point shock; both were within policy limits.
  • Nonperforming assets fell to $9.856 from $10.656 at year-end, or 2.14% of loans and foreclosed assets versus 2.39%. Nonaccrual loans declined to $5.812, while other real estate owned rose to $1.692 from $0.399; $1.363 of loans were transferred to other real estate owned during the quarter. The allowance for loan losses was $5.589.
  • Unused commitments totaled $74.831, including $58.455 of unfunded loan facilities and $16.376 of standby letters of credit. Collateral supporting the letters was approximately $15.602; no allowance for off-balance-sheet credit losses was recorded.
  • Management reported no legal proceedings expected to materially affect results, liquidity or financial position; no changes to previously disclosed risk factors; and effective disclosure controls, with no material change in internal controls during the quarter.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether loan growth and improved earnings persist as net interest margin compresses and provisions and net charge-offs rise.
  • The composition and subsequent performance of nonperforming loans and other real estate owned, and the adequacy of the loan-loss allowance.
  • How much Q1 earnings depended on the securities-sale gain, flood-insurance reimbursement and investment tax credits, and whether these items recur.
  • Actual interest-rate sensitivity and funding needs, including the company’s reported rate-shock estimates and $74.831 of off-balance-sheet commitments.
  • Capital, liquidity and deposit trends, including the effect of higher borrowings and the company’s continued dividend and share-repurchase activity.
