Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash totaled $47.9 million at quarter-end. Stock-based compensation expense was $5.3 million.

Changes versus the prior comparable period

  • Revenue rose $3.6 million, led by service and other revenue, up 39% to $12.0 million. Accelerator Laboratory revenue increased primarily on higher sample-testing and assay-development volumes.
  • Product revenue increased 2% to $19.7 million: consumables growth more than offset lower instrument sales. Instrument revenue declined $2.7 million, which management attributed to constrained customer capital funding.
  • GAAP gross margin improved to 61.2% from 59.5%. Non-GAAP gross margin, which reclassifies shipping and handling costs from operating expenses to cost of product revenue, was 54.5% versus 53.1%.
  • Operating expenses increased 28% to $33.6 million, including higher R&D and SG&A spending. The operating loss widened by $4.5 million; higher interest income partly offset the deterioration in net loss.
  • Operating cash use increased by $10.7 million. Working-capital factors included higher receivables and inventory and lower accrued compensation. Investing cash outflow primarily reflected purchases of marketable securities, not solely operating investment.

Outlook, risks and notable items

  • Management expects instrument-sales softness to continue through the remainder of 2024, while anticipating continued growth in Accelerator Laboratory services and higher R&D expense during 2024. It expects operating expenses and operating losses at least through the next 24 months.
  • Management said available cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities and expected product and service receipts should cover anticipated operating cash requirements for at least 12 months from the filing date. Additional financing may be needed if resources prove insufficient; the Company cautions that financing may be unavailable or involve dilution or restrictive terms.
  • In March 2024, the Lucent AD p-Tau 217 blood test received FDA Breakthrough Device designation. This is not FDA clearance or approval; management did not expect material revenue from this or other Lucent tests until late 2024 or later, if at all.
  • The FDA issued a final rule on laboratory-developed tests on April 29, 2024, after quarter-end. The rule phases in greater oversight over four years and may increase compliance costs and delay test launches; the filing also describes potential effects on customers and demand. The filing does not provide a clear quantified financial impact.
  • Five new Simoa Advantage PLUS assays began shipping in Q1 2024 after a six-quarter assay redevelopment program intended to improve quality, consistency and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Internal control over financial reporting and disclosure controls were deemed ineffective as of March 31, 2024. Material weaknesses concern inventory valuation, including excess and obsolescence reserves, and property-and-equipment accounting. Remediation is underway and management had not yet established effectiveness through sufficient operating history and testing.
  • The Company reported no legal proceedings expected to have a material adverse effect. It had $11.2 million of remaining performance obligations, with $10.2 million expected to be recognized within 12 months, and $5.4 million of undiscounted operating lease payments for the remainder of 2024.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether instrument demand remains weak and whether consumables and laboratory-service growth can continue.
  • Quarterly operating cash burn, working-capital needs, and the duration of liquidity under actual spending and revenue trends.
  • Progress and testing of remediation for the two disclosed material weaknesses, and whether controls are ultimately deemed effective.
  • FDA implementation and timing of the LDT rule, and the regulatory path, launch timing and commercial uptake for Lucent tests.
  • Whether rising operating expenses and stock-based compensation translate into improved revenue scale and margins.
