- Ergo produced 112,879 oz, up from 111,657 oz, as higher yield more than offset lower throughput. Its cash operating cost rose 5.5% to R1,122,778/kg.
- FWGR produced 42,695 oz, down from 43,628 oz, reflecting lower yield and slightly lower throughput. Its cash operating cost rose 14.0% to R560,789/kg.
- FY2026 gold spot prices ranged from approximately US$3,275 to US$5,399/oz. The year-end Rand exchange rate was R16.39/US$1, compared with R17.75 a year earlier. The company generally remains unhedged.
- Total assets were R17,442.0m and equity R12,747.5m at year-end. The environmental rehabilitation provision was R721.4m, compared with R558.7m.
- The board declared a final dividend of 120 South African cents per qualifying share after year-end, totaling R1,042.5m; it was paid September 14, 2026. FY2026 dividends paid totaled R779.3m.
Material changes and projects
- Profitability benefited substantially from the 40% increase in the average Rand gold price received; production was essentially flat. Operating costs rose 8%, while income tax expense increased to R1,627.0m from R824.4m. Ergo moved into a current tax-paying position.
- Mineral Reserves increased 7% to 6.24 million ounces, mainly following the addition of Kloof 2 at FWGR. FWGR’s reserve-based mine life increased to 20 years from 16; Ergo’s was 21 years, compared with 22.
- Growth capital expenditure rose to R3,457.4m from R1,899.5m. FWGR accounted for R2,735.8m of total capital additions, primarily for the Regional Tailings Storage Facility (RTSF), DP2 plant expansion and associated pipelines.
- The RTSF was about 67% complete at year-end. Beneficial occupation timing moved to the last quarter of FY2027; initial capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per month is targeted in FY2028, subject to approvals and commissioning. Heavy rainfall and regulatory timing have affected schedules.
- The Daggafontein TSF began receiving tailings in July 2026. Ergo’s proposed Withok TSF, with planned capacity of approximately 310 million tonnes, remains subject to regulatory approvals; completion is targeted for the end of calendar 2029.
- DRDGOLD sold its interest in Stellar for R147.5m cash proceeds and recorded a R4.8m loss on disposal. The sale was consistent with the decision to focus on core mining operations.
Liquidity, outlook and key risks
- Management expects cash resources, operating cash flows, available bank facilities and potential long-term project financing to cover FY2027 commitments of approximately R3bn. It reported approximately R5.3bn spent against a planned R10bn total growth-capital investment program at June 30, 2026.
- Nedbank facilities include a R681m general banking facility, of which the R181m guarantee facility is fully utilized, and a R1bn revolving credit facility with a R500m accordion option. The general and revolving facilities were otherwise undrawn at year-end. The revolving facility includes interest-cover and leverage covenants.
- FY2027 guidance: Group production of 160,000–170,000 oz; cash operating cost of approximately R1,099,000/kg; all-in sustaining cost of approximately R1,230,000/kg; and planned total growth-capital investment of around R3bn. The filing cautions that power, permits, weather, grades, recoveries and cost inflation could affect results.
- Key operating risks include tailings-deposition capacity and TSF safety, project delay or cost overruns, permitting, water availability, electricity supply and tariffs, cyanide and other input shortages, fuel and energy price volatility, and severe weather. South African load shedding was suspended since March 2024, but could resume. A supplier’s FY2026 sodium-cyanide force majeure was partly mitigated by the company’s briquette-processing plant.
- Regulatory uncertainty is material: a draft 2025 bill could classify historic tailings stockpiles as minerals and require mining rights to reclaim them, as well as change empowerment and beneficiation requirements. The bill was not enacted in the filing.
- Contingencies include the unresolved Ekurhuleni electricity-tariff litigation (municipal claims of R74.0m and R31.6m; related payments under protest had a R31.0m carrying value), a contractor’s claims totaling R90.4m, and an occupational lung-disease class action for which claims have not been quantified. The filing says no reliable estimate can be made for certain environmental seepage and post-closure obligations.
- The company reported no material cybersecurity incident in FY2026. Management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective; the auditor issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls. Critical audit matters included environmental rehabilitation provisions and deferred tax valuation.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Progress, final cost and regulatory approvals for the RTSF, DP2 expansion and Libanon pump station, including whether FY2027–FY2028 commissioning and throughput targets remain achievable.
- Withok TSF approval and construction timing, and the remaining usable capacity of Brakpan and other Ergo deposition facilities.
- FY2027 guidance assumptions, especially the gold-price and Rand exchange-rate outlook, unit costs, production ramp-up and growth-capital requirements.
- Cash conversion and funding needs as the capital program continues; confirm facility availability, covenant headroom and any future borrowing or hedging.
- Potential financial exposure and developments in the Ekurhuleni tariff dispute, occupational lung-disease action, BGM claims and rehabilitation obligations.
- Any enacted changes to South African tailings, mining-right, royalty, empowerment or environmental rules that could affect reclamation economics and permits.
