  • Average gold price received fell 3% to R894,409/kg. Total revenue declined 3%, while operating costs rose 12.3% to R3,506.5 million, mainly from inflation and above-inflation increases in consumables, diesel, steel and cyanide.

Material changes and notable items

  • Ergo production fell to 133,618 oz from 137,059 oz, primarily because of lower throughput amid heavier rainfall. FWGR production increased to 50,284 oz from 46,940 oz, with improved yield offsetting slightly lower throughput.
  • Capital expenditure increased to R598.4 million from R395.7 million, including Ergo infrastructure and solar-project spending and FWGR plant, design and tailings-facility work.
  • Mineral reserves rose to 6.04 million oz from 5.35 million oz, largely from adding the Daggafontein tailings storage facility (TSF), partly offset by excluding Grootvlei dumps amid ownership claims. Reported mine life increased to 19 years at Ergo and 20 years at FWGR.
  • The company recognized R84.7 million of insurance proceeds as other income related to business-interruption claims from COVID-19 lockdowns; R53.0 million had been received by year-end, with the remaining R31.7 million received after year-end.
  • The environmental rehabilitation provision was R517.7 million, down from R570.8 million. During FY2022, DRDGOLD transferred rehabilitation trust funds to ring-fenced insurance arrangements; R589.8 million was held in insurance instruments and guarantees of R614.0 million had been issued to the regulator.
  • After year-end, the board declared a final dividend of 40 SA cents per qualifying share, totaling R342.0 million, paid September 26, 2022. FY2022 dividends paid totaled R513.3 million in the cash-flow statement.
  • KPMG issued unmodified audit opinions on the financial statements and internal control over financial reporting. The auditor identified critical audit matters involving rehabilitation provisions, deferred tax liabilities and the valuation of the Rand Refinery investment.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

  • FY2023 guidance: production of 160,000–180,000 oz, cash operating cost of approximately R685,000/kg and capital investment of approximately R1,400 million. Management said production targets may be affected by grades, throughput, power, supply-chain disruption, weather and other operating risks.
  • Management stated existing cash, operating cash flow and long-term financing options were expected to meet FY2023 commitments. The filing also warns that major projects may require new funding and that cash flows and financing availability are uncertain.
  • Ergo’s solar project is intended to reduce Eskom dependence; the filing expected benefits from April 2023, while elsewhere it states project completion is expected in FY2024. Completion timing, budget and savings remain uncertain.
  • FWGR Phase 2 depends on regulatory approval for an amended regional TSF design and substantial funding. The filing gives different construction expectations in different sections—FY2027 in one passage and FY2031 in another. Treat timing as unclear and verify with subsequent disclosures.
  • Tailings deposition capacity is a significant constraint: Driefontein 4 TSF was expected to reach capacity during FY2025, with interim use of Sibanye-Stillwater’s Leeudoorn TSF contemplated. Ergo’s Brakpan/Withok final design also required regulatory approval.
  • Key exposures include gold-price and rand/dollar movements (the group was generally unhedged), rising operating costs, Eskom power interruptions and tariffs, water scarcity, labor action, tailings-facility and environmental risks, and South African regulatory and permitting uncertainty.
  • Contingencies include an occupational lung-disease class action in which DRDGOLD is not part of the settlement reached by other mining companies; the company said potential liability could not yet be quantified. The Ekurhuleni electricity-tariff dispute includes municipal claims of R74.0 million and R31.6 million, and a company counterclaim of approximately R43 million; payments under protest were recognized as an asset.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Use FY2022 annual results, not the requested “2021 Q4” period; the filing provides no clear standalone Q4 figures.
  • Confirm FY2023 production, unit-cost and capital-spending guidance against subsequent results, particularly given higher FY2022 costs and planned investment.
  • Track approvals, funding, schedules and interim deposition arrangements for FWGR Phase 2 and the Ergo TSF design; resolve the filing’s inconsistent Phase 2 construction dates.
  • Review reserve assumptions and legal title risks, especially the Marievale ownership arbitration and Grootvlei exclusions.
  • Monitor outcomes and potential financial exposure from the occupational-disease litigation and Ekurhuleni electricity dispute.
  • Assess the adequacy and accessibility of rehabilitation funding, and the sensitivity of earnings and cash flow to gold prices, exchange rates, power costs and inflation.
