Revenue growth reflected higher gas and power prices and volumes, particularly in Energy Trading, as well as higher utility revenue. Fuel, purchased power and gas expense increased to $2.155 billion from $1.024 billion, largely offsetting revenue growth. The effective tax rate increased to 33% from 31%, including $8 million of deferred tax expense from New York state tax reform.
Segment net income attributable to DTE was $136 million for Electric, $129 million for Gas, $21 million for Gas Storage and Pipelines, $15 million for Power and Industrial Projects, $42 million for Energy Trading, and a $17 million Corporate and Other loss. Energy Trading's earnings benefited from extreme winter weather and favorable gas structured and transportation results, partly offset by power full-requirements losses.
Liquidity, debt and financial position
- Cash and cash equivalents were $98 million at March 31, 2014, compared with $52 million at December 31, 2013.
- Total debt, including current and long-term debt, was approximately $8.4 billion; long-term debt fair value was $8.602 billion versus a carrying amount of $7.979 billion.
- Short-term borrowings increased to $375 million from $131 million, while current long-term debt increased to $1.069 billion from $898 million.
- DTE reported approximately $1.5 billion of available liquidity, consisting of cash and available revolving credit capacity. Net availability under listed facilities was $1.455 billion.
- Funded debt-to-capitalization ratios were 48% for DTE Energy, 50% for DTE Electric, and 46% for DTE Gas, within the 65% covenant limit.
- Approximately $1 billion of long-term debt matures during the next twelve months. DTE Electric also agreed to issue $250 million of mortgage bonds expected to fund in June 2014.
- Management expects approximately $1.6 billion of 2014 operating cash flow and approximately $2.3 billion of 2014 capital expenditures.
Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- Net income attributable to DTE increased 39%, and diluted EPS increased 37%, driven primarily by higher Electric, Gas, and Energy Trading earnings.
- Electric gross margin increased $67 million, including a $32 million benefit from amortization of refundable revenue decoupling and deferred gain balances and a $13 million increase in base sales, including weather effects.
- Gas gross margin increased $60 million, primarily from $46 million of favorable weather effects and $16 million of higher midstream storage and transportation services.
- Gas Storage and Pipelines net income increased $4 million due to higher Bluestone pipeline volumes, Susquehanna gathering activity, and storage revenue.
- Energy Trading gross margin increased $52 million, including $48 million of higher realized margins and $4 million of higher unrealized margins. The segment remains exposed to substantial mark-to-market timing volatility.
- Operating cash flow declined despite higher earnings because of working-capital changes, including accounts receivable and regulatory asset and liability movements.
- Net cash used in investing activities increased to $442 million from $332 million, primarily because of higher utility and non-utility capital spending.
- DTE repurchased $50 million of common stock and paid $116 million of common dividends during the quarter; no publicly announced repurchase program was used.
Guidance, outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management expects long-term growth from utility infrastructure, environmental and renewable investments, and targeted expansion in Gas Storage and Pipelines and Power and Industrial Projects. No specific earnings or EPS guidance is provided in the filing.
- Planned 2014 capital spending is approximately $2.3 billion. DTE Electric estimates 2014 environmental capital expenditures of approximately $280 million and up to $1.2 billion through 2021 under current regulations.
- Extreme winter weather materially affected first-quarter results, benefiting Gas and gas-related Energy Trading activities while increasing losses in the power full-requirements strategy.
- Energy Trading earnings may remain volatile because derivatives are marked to market while related physical transportation, storage, inventory, and other non-derivative positions are accounted for differently. The net mark-to-market position was a $60 million liability at March 31, 2014.
- Commodity, interest-rate, credit, weather, regulatory, environmental, nuclear-operating, outage, cyber, and capital-market risks remain material. A downgrade below investment grade could require up to approximately $444 million of additional collateral under ratings-trigger provisions.
- EPA and Sierra Club proceedings allege Clean Air Act and New Source Review violations involving several coal-fired plants. Potential outcomes include additional controls, early retirements, environmental projects, fines, and increased capital requirements; the company cannot predict the financial impact.
- Environmental rulemaking concerning emissions, cooling-water intake structures, wastewater, coal ash, and greenhouse gases could require additional expenditures that are not currently quantifiable.
- Purchase commitments are estimated at approximately $9.1 billion from 2014 through 2051. Maximum potential liabilities under synthetic-fuel and reduced-emissions-fuel guarantees were approximately $1.1 billion and $111 million, respectively, although payment was considered remote.
- The filing reports a $300,000 fine and a $300,000 supplemental environmental project related to the Pennsylvania coke battery facility. Management states that other pending proceedings are not expected to have a material effect, but certain major environmental matters remain unresolved.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether unusually severe winter weather and related Energy Trading gains are nonrecurring and how subsequent commodity prices affect earnings.
- The timing and funding of approximately $1 billion of debt maturities, the June 2014 $250 million bond issuance, and continued access to revolving credit facilities.
- Actual 2014 operating cash flow and capital spending versus management's $1.6 billion and $2.3 billion expectations.
- Regulatory recovery of utility investments, PSCR and GCR balances, and the outcome of the challenged recovery of up to $32 million of Fermi-related purchased-power costs.
- Potential costs and operational restrictions arising from EPA, Sierra Club, coal ash, MATS, greenhouse-gas, wastewater, and other environmental proceedings.
- Collateral requirements and liquidity sensitivity if DTE's credit rating declines or commodity prices move materially.
- Future pension and other postretirement contributions, including potential additional 2014 contributions of up to $160 million and $145 million, respectively.
