Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- Higher interest rates lifted loan yields and interest income, but funding costs also rose sharply: interest expense increased to ₩17.003 trillion from ₩9.272 trillion. The group’s NIM improved modestly from 1.95% to 1.99%.
- Credit costs increased materially. Non-performing loans rose to ₩2.379 trillion, or 0.53% of loans, from ₩1.915 trillion, or 0.44%; non-performing and other impaired loans together were ₩4.908 trillion, or 1.09% of loans.
- Fair-value gains on financial instruments swung to ₩2.163 trillion from losses of ₩1.140 trillion. Derivatives held for trading recorded a ₩431 billion loss in 2023, versus ₩161 billion of gains in 2022.
- Credit card delinquency (30 days or more) rose to 1.08% from 1.01%; net write-off ratio increased to 2.45% from 1.47%. Restructured card loans rose to ₩204 billion.
- IFRS 17 was applied to 2023 and 2022, with 2022 comparative figures restated; 2021 was not restated. Insurance-related comparisons with 2021 are therefore not directly comparable.
Outlook, commentary, risks and unusual items
- Management describes the Korean and global economic outlook as uncertain. It highlights household debt, interest-rate and currency volatility, slower growth, real-estate project financing and construction-sector stress, geopolitical developments, and intense competition as risks.
- Credit quality warrants attention: 90-days-past-due retail non-performing loans increased to ₩451 billion in 2023 from ₩308 billion in 2022. SME non-performing loans rose to ₩201 billion from ₩123 billion. The filing notes that delinquencies could rise further.
- Korean banks, including Kookmin Bank, were expected to provide approximately ₩2 trillion in aggregate liquidity support to small-business owners under a government program announced in December 2023. Government-led borrower support may affect credit terms, margins, and credit costs.
- Post-year-end customer compensation: Kookmin Bank’s HSCEI-linked equity-linked securities were expected to mature in the first half of 2024, with approximately ₩4.8 trillion outstanding. In March 2024, the bank agreed to voluntary customer compensation; an estimated ₩861.5 billion provision was expected in Q1 2024, subject to change.
- Other disclosed matters include a ₩56.8 billion claim relating to an Australian investment trust, a Russian bank’s claim for approximately US$109.2 million of frozen funds, and a Korea Fair Trade Commission investigation into alleged coordination of real-estate loan-to-value ratios. Outcomes are uncertain.
- Capital return included a 2023 dividend of ₩3,060 per share, totaling about ₩1.174 trillion, and share repurchases. The filing reports 10.97 million shares purchased during 2023; cancellation of shares acquired under the 2023 trust arrangement was planned. A further approximately ₩320 billion repurchase trust was announced in February 2024.
- The auditor issued unqualified opinions on the 2023 IFRS financial statements and internal control over financial reporting. The report identifies expected credit losses on amortized-cost loans and insurance-contract loss-ratio assumptions as critical audit matters.
Most important facts for investors to verify
- Reconcile reported profit attributable to parent shareholders, consolidated profit, and the reported EPS; confirm the IFRS 17 restatement basis for comparisons.
- Review credit-loss allowance coverage and trends in retail, SME, credit-card, overseas, and real-estate project-financing exposures.
- Assess the final HSCEI compensation provision and any related regulatory findings, customer claims, or additional losses.
- Check deposit retention, funding costs, liquidity ratios, and capital buffers against the higher requirements taking effect in 2024.
- Confirm completion and cancellation status of share repurchases, and the amount and timing of dividends actually paid.
