Planet Labs PBC — Form 10-Q Summary

Reporting period: Three months ended April 30, 2023 (Planet’s fiscal first quarter of fiscal 2024), compared with the three months ended April 30, 2022. Amounts are in U.S. dollars.

Business context

Planet designs, builds and operates satellites and sells geospatial imagery, data and analytics through a cloud-based platform, primarily under subscription and usage-based contracts. It reported 903 end-of-period customers, up 9% year over year. Management describes a recurring-revenue model and a land-and-expand sales strategy.

Financial performance and liquidity

  • Revenue: $52.7 million, up 31% from $40.1 million. Management attributed the increase to $7.4 million of net expansion from existing customers and $5.2 million from new customers. U.S. revenue was $23.1 million; rest-of-world revenue was $29.6 million.
  • Profitability: Gross profit was $28.1 million versus $16.5 million; gross margin increased to 53% from 41%. Operating expenses rose 13% to $72.8 million, and operating loss narrowed to $44.7 million from $47.7 million. • Non-GAAP measures: Non-GAAP gross margin was 56% versus 45%. Adjusted EBITDA loss was $19.1 million versus $16.3 million; these measures exclude items including stock-based compensation, depreciation and amortization, and warrant fair-value changes.
  • Cash flow and investment: Operating cash used was $30.6 million versus $6.5 million. Investing cash used was $12.6 million, including $6.3 million of property and equipment purchases and $0.7 million of capitalized software; financing provided $1.4 million. Capital expenditures were 13% of revenue, versus 9%.
  • Liquidity and debt: At April 30, cash and cash equivalents were $140.8 million and short-term investments were $235.4 million, totaling $376.2 million. Current assets were $434.5 million and current liabilities $111.7 million. The company reported no debt outstanding. Management said it believes cash on hand and anticipated operating cash flows can fund obligations for the next 12 months, while noting possible future financing needs.
  • Margins and costs: Cost of revenue rose 4% to $24.6 million. R&D increased 14% to $28.2 million, sales and marketing increased 23% to $23.1 million, and general and administrative expense increased 4% to $21.5 million.

Material changes and notable items

  • Net dollar retention fell to 98% from 105%; including winbacks, it was 99% versus 105%. Management cited timing delays in renewing certain government contracts, compared with government expansion contracts in the prior-year quarter. Recurring ACV was 93%, up from 92%.
  • One customer represented 21% of quarterly revenue. One customer represented 17% of accounts receivable at quarter end.
  • In April 2023, Planet shortened the estimated useful lives of two high-resolution satellites. The change added $0.4 million of depreciation in the quarter and is expected to add $5.0 million during fiscal 2024.
  • The Google content license agreement expired in April 2023. Related revenue was $0.3 million in the quarter, versus $3.0 million a year earlier. Planet also reported $147.3 million of remaining minimum Google hosting purchase commitments through January 2028.
  • Remaining performance obligations were $138.0 million: $47.1 million deferred revenue and $90.9 million of contracted revenue to be invoiced later. Planet expects to recognize approximately 80% within 12 months and 99% within 24 months.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

The filing provides no quantified revenue, profit or cash-flow guidance. Management expects continued investment in software, analytics, sales, new markets and satellite capabilities; it anticipates increased R&D, sales and marketing, cost of revenue and capital expenditures, and says losses and negative operating cash flows may continue in the near term. Business seasonality has historically weighted results toward the second half of the year.

Risks highlighted include customer retention and renewal timing, growth in demand and new-customer acquisition, competition, satellite performance and replacement costs, limited launch-provider availability, regulatory approvals, cybersecurity and geopolitical events, economic conditions, and potential need for additional financing. Planet reported no material legal proceedings, no material change to previously disclosed risk factors, and effective disclosure controls as of April 30, 2023.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether government contract renewals recover and net dollar retention improves.
  • Whether reported revenue growth converts into improved operating cash flow, given the $30.6 million quarterly operating cash outflow.
  • Whether the $376.2 million of cash and short-term investments is sufficient under the planned investment pace and contractual commitments.
  • The effect of the revised satellite useful lives and the expected $5.0 million fiscal-year depreciation increase on reported margins.
  • Customer concentration, the expired Google content license, and the economics and duration of Google hosting commitments.
  • Remaining performance obligations’ conversion to revenue, including the timing and collectability of amounts not yet invoiced.
