Gross margin benefited primarily from moderating raw-material costs, while SG&A increased because of higher employee-related costs and investments in new stores, digital technologies, systems and other growth initiatives. The effective tax rate declined to 21.1% from 22.3%, primarily because of more favorable employee share-based-payment tax benefits.
Segment performance and material changes
- Paint Stores Group: Sales increased 0.5% to $2,873.0 million; store sales open more than 12 months were approximately flat. Segment profit declined 6.4% to $493.2 million, despite improved gross profit, due primarily to higher employee costs and growth investments.
- Consumer Brands Group: Sales decreased 7.1% to $811.0 million, reflecting a mid-single-digit volume decline, prior-year divestitures and unfavorable currency translation. Segment profit increased 63.5% to $153.4 million due to better fixed-cost absorption, lower raw-material costs and price increases.
- Performance Coatings Group: Sales decreased 1.6% to $1,681.9 million because of lower volumes and unfavorable pricing, partly offset by favorable currency and the SIC Holding acquisition. Segment profit increased 8.6% to $237.7 million.
- Consolidated net sales declined primarily because of lower Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings volumes. The prior-year divestitures reduced Consumer Brands sales by approximately 2.6% in the quarter; the SIC Holding acquisition increased Performance Coatings sales by approximately 1.3%.
- Comprehensive income declined to $424.5 million from $512.2 million, primarily because foreign-currency translation produced a $75.3 million loss in Q1 2024 versus income of $40.2 million in Q1 2023.
Cash flow, liquidity and capital structure
- Operating cash flow was negative $58.9 million, primarily due to seasonal working-capital needs. Investing cash usage was $321.3 million, including $283.8 million of capital expenditures.
- Financing cash flow was $289.6 million, including a $882.5 million increase in short-term borrowings, $545.5 million of share repurchases and $182.5 million of dividends.
- Cash and equivalents were $179.9 million at March 31, 2024, compared with $276.8 million at December 31, 2023.
- Total debt was $10.735 billion, including $1.256 billion of short-term borrowings. Net debt was $10.555 billion. Unused capacity under credit agreements was $2.445 billion.
- The current ratio was 0.78, and net working capital was a deficit of $1.641 billion, primarily reflecting higher current debt and other current liabilities.
- The company returned $728.0 million to shareholders through dividends and repurchases. It repurchased 1.7 million shares for $545.5 million and had authorization to repurchase approximately 37.9 million additional shares.
- The quarterly dividend increased to $0.715 per share from $0.605. If maintained, management indicated an annual 2024 dividend of $2.86 per share.
Guidance, outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management remains confident in its customer-focused strategy and is encouraged by professional architectural demand and sentiment entering the second quarter.
- Performance Coatings demand is expected to remain variable by business and region. Management plans continued investment in stores, personnel, innovation, digital capabilities and other growth initiatives.
- Management expects 2024 capital expenditures to be approximately in line with 2023. Core capital expenditures are targeted at less than 2% of net sales, in addition to headquarters and research-and-development-center construction.
- The new headquarters real-estate financing is expected to generate total incremental proceeds of approximately $800 million to $850 million. The related financing obligation was $594.0 million at March 31, 2024, and future lease payments are expected to increase materially once construction is complete and amounts are determined.
- Environmental accruals totaled approximately $317.2 million, including $224.8 million in long-term liabilities and $92.4 million in current accruals. The maximum of estimated ranges exceeded recorded accruals by $92.9 million. Management stated that environmental matters are not expected to materially adversely affect financial condition, liquidity or cash flow because remediation will occur over an extended period, but actual costs remain uncertain.
- Lead-pigment and lead-based-paint litigation remains a significant contingency. Except for the California proceedings, the company has not accrued amounts for this litigation because losses are not considered probable or cannot be reasonably estimated. A material adverse effect is possible if liability is ultimately imposed.
- A New Jersey environmental lawsuit concerning the Gibbsboro site had trial scheduled for October 15, 2024. Certain Wisconsin personal-injury cases remain subject to further proceedings.
- Key operating risks include macroeconomic weakness, interest rates, raw-material and energy costs, supply-chain disruptions, foreign exchange, competition, acquisition integration, cybersecurity, environmental regulation, tax matters and litigation.
- The company was in compliance with its leverage covenant at March 31, 2024 and expected to remain compliant. Disclosure controls and procedures were reported effective.
