Can Lumen's Multi-Cloud Expansion Boost AI Connectivity Growth?

Lumen Technologies, Inc. LUMN is expanding access to its Multi-Cloud Gateway service, enabling enterprises to connect more than 10 million U.S. business locations to private, high-performance cloud networking. The expansion extends the service beyond Lumen’s fiber footprint, allowing qualified third-party connected locations to access the same cloud networking environment available to Lumen on-net sites. The move is aimed at helping enterprises extend cloud and AI connectivity across more locations through a consistent, digitally managed network experience while reducing complexity and streamlining operations.

As businesses increasingly adopt multiple cloud environments to meet performance, resiliency, security and specialized workload requirements, managing connectivity across locations can become more complex. Many enterprises also operate sites outside a single provider’s network footprint, which may require separate network architectures and management tools. Lumen’s expanded Multi-Cloud Gateway access is designed to bring more locations under a consistent cloud networking model. Through the Lumen Connect portal and APIs, enterprises can apply the same routing policies, segmentation controls and digital management experience across additional locations.

The service is also designed to simplify multi-cloud connectivity for enterprise AI applications. Healthcare providers can use it to securely move medical imaging data between clinics and cloud platforms, while financial institutions can standardize networking policies across branch locations. Manufacturers can also bring newly acquired facilities online faster without redesigning their network architecture. Multi-Cloud Gateway supports simpler operations, faster deployment and reduced reliance on the public internet for critical workloads.

The expansion builds on Lumen’s programmable network, which combines private cloud connectivity, software-based control and digital service delivery through the Lumen Connect platform. Together, these capabilities are intended to help enterprises simplify networking and support AI workloads across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Lumen is gaining from the growing AI opportunity, which is driving demand for its Private Connectivity Fabric (PCF) solutions, with $13 billion in PCF deals secured to date. Strategic revenues increased to 53% of total business revenues in the second quarter of 2026 from 51% in the previous quarter. Higher adoption of network-as-a-service solutions and cost discipline are additional tailwinds, with the company targeting $1 billion in cost reductions by 2027. The Alkira acquisition should further expand LUMN’s exposure to cloud and multi-cloud networking opportunities.

Taking a Look at LUMN’s Competitors

Verizon Communications VZ is gaining from improving customer trends, broader broadband reach and a stronger cash flow outlook as it advances its converged connectivity strategy. Postpaid phone additions, lower churn and progress on Frontier integration are supporting growth, while the company has raised its full-year outlook for mobility and broadband service revenue, adjusted EPS and free cash flow. However, intense wireless competition and weaker equipment revenue could limit service-led growth. High capital requirements for network, fiber and AI infrastructure may delay returns, while elevated leverage following acquisitions constrains financial flexibility. The planned BT Group joint venture and AI initiatives provide additional growth opportunities.

AT&T T is benefiting from strong fiber-led connectivity growth, 5G network expansion and rising demand for AI-ready and edge services. The company continues to expand its fiber footprint, add Advanced Connectivity customers and deepen household convergence between broadband and wireless. Network modernization and newly acquired 600 MHz spectrum are expected to improve capacity, coverage and reliability, supporting longer-term connectivity growth. AT&T is also broadening its enterprise offerings through cloud-managed video, edge computing and private 5G services. Cost transformation, Open RAN deployment and vendor rationalization are supporting profitability.
