Can Alliant Energy's Diversified Generation Portfolio Support Growth?

Alliant Energy Corporation LNT benefits from a diversified generation portfolio comprising natural gas, coal, wind, solar, hydropower and energy storage. The company’s electricity generation mix in 2025 comprised 36.9% natural gas, 28% wind, 22.8% coal, 8.5% solar, 1% hydroelectric power and 2.8% other sources. This diversified energy mix combines dispatchable generation with renewable resources to support electricity supply and system reliability.

Alliant Energy plans to invest $13.4 billion in capital projects from 2026 to 2029 to expand generation, renewable energy, energy storage and utility infrastructure, supporting its long-term earnings per share (EPS) growth target of 5-7%. Its generation strategy includes approximately 1,600 megawatts (MW) of new natural gas capacity, 1,300 MW of renewable generation and 1,000 MW of energy storage through 2029.

Alliant Energy’s diversified generation portfolio supports growing electricity requirements, including demand from data centers, while serving a broad customer base across its service territory.

The diversified portfolio also helps LNT manage the challenges associated with changing fuel prices, weather patterns and electricity demand. Wind and solar generation can reduce reliance on fossil fuels when renewable resources are available, while dispatchable generation provides additional flexibility to support grid reliability. This balance is particularly important as electricity demand evolves and the company continues to invest in cleaner energy resources.

Overall, the diversified generation portfolio provides Alliant Energy with greater operational flexibility, a broader range of energy sources and a pathway to balance reliability, cost management and environmental goals.

Balanced Generation Mix Supports Utility Growth

A balanced generation mix of natural gas, nuclear and renewable energy supports reliability, flexibility and rising electricity demand. These resources also strengthen long-term growth prospects. Not only LNT, but other companies are also benefiting from a balanced generation mix.

PPL Corporation PPL is expanding its Kentucky generation portfolio with natural gas, solar and battery storage. These investments enhance supply reliability, accommodate rising electricity demand and support long-term regulated earnings growth.

Xcel Energy’s XEL second-quarter 2026 update highlighted 3,928 MW of proposed wind, solar, storage and natural gas resources to strengthen grid reliability and meet growing electricity needs.
