Segment net income attributable to DTE Energy was $208 million for Electric, $169 million for Gas, $79 million for Gas Storage and Pipelines, $28 million for Power and Industrial Projects, $(55) million for Energy Trading, and $(32) million for Corporate and Other.

Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- DTE Energy net income increased $57 million, driven primarily by higher Electric and Gas earnings and lower losses on rabbi trust investments.
- Energy Trading margin declined $114 million. The decline included $118 million of timing-related losses in gas strategies that management expects to reverse as underlying contracts settle.
- Electric utility margin increased $82 million, including $47 million from new rates, $14 million from weather, $11 million from energy waste reduction mechanisms, and $10 million from renewable portfolio standard mechanisms.
- Gas utility margin increased $55 million, primarily from $45 million of new rates and $17 million of favorable weather, partially offset by a $7 million reduction from the infrastructure recovery mechanism.
- Gas Storage and Pipelines revenue increased $27 million, primarily from the LEAP pipeline entering service in 2020 and higher Blue Union gathering revenue.
- DTE Energy issued $1.0 billion of DTE Electric green mortgage bonds in March 2021, consisting of $575 million at 1.90% due 2028 and $425 million at 3.25% due 2051.
- DTE Energy’s fair-value mark-to-market position moved from a $28 million net asset at December 31, 2020 to a $98 million net liability at March 31, 2021, primarily reflecting trading-related losses.
- Cash used for investing activities decreased to $705 million from $1.342 billion, primarily because of lower capital expenditures and no comparable acquisition spending.
Guidance, outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items
- Management expects approximately $3.0 billion of 2021 operating cash flow and approximately $4.2 billion of 2021 capital investments and equity-method-investee contributions for DTE Energy. DTE Electric expects approximately $3.0 billion of 2021 capital investments.
- DTE Energy expects to pay approximately $0.8 billion of dividends in 2021 and may issue up to $200 million of equity, subject to market conditions and management discretion.
- DTE Energy intends to spin off DTE Midstream by mid-2021, subject to Board approval, SEC effectiveness of the registration statement, regulatory approvals, and other conditions. Completion is not assured, and management expects the transaction would reduce DTE Energy’s future earnings and cash flows.
- DTE Gas filed a rate case requesting a $195 million base-rate increase and an increase in authorized return on equity from 9.9% to 10.25%; a final Michigan Public Service Commission order is expected by December 2021.
- DTE Electric requested securitization of $184 million of River Rouge plant book value and tree-trimming surge costs; a final MPSC order was expected by the end of June 2021.
- COVID-19 shifted electric demand from commercial and industrial customers toward residential customers and caused incremental health and safety costs, but the filing states that the Q1 financial impact was not significant.
- Brilliant Energy, an Energy Trading customer, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on March 16, 2021. DTE did not record $48 million of related receivables because collection was no longer probable and fully reserved a further $12 million of pre-petition receivables. DTE Energy Trading subsequently agreed to provide up to $14 million of post-petition secured financing; expected recoveries remain uncertain.
- Environmental and regulatory exposure includes estimated CCR and ELG capital expenditures of $697 million, including $552 million during 2021–2025, and unresolved air-quality and permitting matters. DTE Electric had $10 million accrued for remediation and DTE Gas had $24 million.
- DTE Energy estimates potential collateral requirements of $506 million if its credit rating falls below investment grade. Guarantees include potential maximum payments of approximately $400 million for synthetic fuel matters, $631 million for REF facilities, and $551 million for NEXUS capacity obligations; payments are considered remote.
- Energy Trading remains exposed to commodity-price, basis, counterparty-credit, and mark-to-market volatility. The filing states that near-term market conditions are expected to remain challenging.
