- Q3 net income increased 70% and diluted EPS increased 67%; nine-month net income increased 7% and EPS increased 6%.
- Revenue was essentially flat in the quarter and declined 15% year to date, primarily reflecting lower energy-trading and gas-segment revenue.
- Nine-month net cash from operating activities was $1.468 billion, up from $1.298 billion. Capital expenditures were $1.401 billion, including $1.239 billion for utility projects and $162 million for non-utility projects. Investing cash use was $1.572 billion.
- Financing activities provided $123 million. DTE Energy ended the period with $67 million of cash and cash equivalents, compared with $48 million at December 31, 2014.
- At September 30, DTE Energy had $8.856 billion of long-term debt, $468 million of current long-term debt, and $185 million of short-term borrowings. Net availability under revolving credit and letter-of-credit facilities was approximately $1.700 billion; management reported approximately $1.8 billion of total available liquidity including cash.
- Total assets were $28.654 billion and total equity was $8.833 billion. DTE Energy’s funded-debt-to-capitalization ratio was 0.50, within the 0.65 covenant limit.
Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- Electric segment net income increased to $214 million in Q3 from $135 million and to $449 million for nine months from $400 million. Q3 gross margin benefited from favorable weather, the July rate increase, and lower restoration and line-clearance costs; these benefits were partly offset by the expiration of securitization-related surcharge revenue.
- DTE Electric implemented a $230 million annualized rate increase effective July 1, 2015, consisting of $190 million related to its rate request and $40 million from elimination of a credit surcharge. A final MPSC order was expected in December 2015.
- Energy Trading swung to $12 million of net income in Q3 from a $22 million loss, driven largely by favorable unrealized mark-to-market results. Nine-month segment net income was approximately zero versus $6 million in 2014.
- Gas Storage and Pipelines net income increased to $27 million in Q3 from $20 million and to $79 million for nine months from $59 million, primarily from increased pipeline and gathering volumes.
- Gas segment net income declined to $93 million for nine months from $109 million, mainly due to weather, lower midstream storage and transportation revenue, and lower gross margin.
- DTE Electric acquired a 732 MW simple-cycle natural-gas facility for approximately $241 million in January 2015. A subsequent 350 MW facility acquisition for approximately $69 million closed October 1, 2015.
- DTE Electric’s securitization bonds were paid off in March 2015, and related regulatory assets were fully amortized. Excess securitization funds began being returned to customers in September 2015.
- Asset-retirement obligations increased to $2.180 billion for DTE Energy and $2.007 billion for DTE Electric, principally because of revised coal-ash storage cost estimates under the Coal Combustion Residual Rule.
Guidance, outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items
- Management expected approximately $1.8 billion of 2015 operating cash flow and up to approximately $2.5 billion of 2015 capital investments, environmental expenditures, renewable and energy-optimization spending, and equity-method investments.
- Expected 2016–2020 capital investments include $8.2 billion for DTE Electric, $1.6 billion for DTE Gas, $2.0–$2.6 billion for Gas Storage and Pipelines, and $600–$900 million for Power and Industrial Projects.
- Approximately $470 million of DTE Energy long-term debt was scheduled to mature during the following twelve months and was expected to be refinanced or repaid with internally generated funds.
- Energy Trading remains exposed to commodity-price, mark-to-market, timing, liquidity, and counterparty risks. Contractual collateral requirements following a downgrade below investment grade were approximately $420 million.
- Environmental and regulatory matters include Clean Air Act proceedings, MATS and ozone requirements, the Clean Power Plan, coal-ash compliance, wastewater rules, cooling-water intake requirements, and potential additional pollution-control or facility-retirement costs. Several impacts could not be quantified.
- DTE Electric estimated approximately $190 million of coal-ash facility construction costs over the next seven years and had incurred approximately $2.2 billion of air-compliance spending through 2014.
- An MPSC order required a $25 million customer refund, including interest, related to an industrial-customer complaint; approximately $16 million was expected to be recovered through regulatory mechanisms.
- DTE Electric maintained nuclear insurance coverage for Fermi 2, but remains exposed to potential nuclear assessments, decommissioning obligations, spent-fuel disposal uncertainty, and operational risks.
- DTE Energy reported approximately $7.4 billion of long-term purchase commitments through 2051; DTE Electric reported approximately $2.2 billion through 2033. DTE Energy also had approximately $850 million of synthetic-fuel guarantees and $238 million of reduced-emissions-fuel guarantees, although payment was considered remote.
- Management identified weather, regulatory recovery, environmental compliance, commodity prices, interest rates, capital-market access, outages, cyber and security events, labor matters, litigation, benefit-plan performance, and counterparty credit as material risks.
