Bill Ackman Just Bought Visa Stock. What Barchart Options Data Says Could Come Next for V Investors.

Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square disclosed a new position in Visa (V) in its semiannual report released on Aug. 13 as part of the hedge fund's most sweeping portfolio expansion in recent years.

The Visa stake was one of six entirely new positions added between the end of March and the end of June, alongside Mastercard (MA), Netflix (NFLX), S&P Global (SPGI), Intercontinental Exchange (INTC), and Alcon (ALC)

Ackman characterized the purchases as opportunities created by market dislocation in the first half of 2026, allowing him to build positions at prices he believes are well below intrinsic value.

At the time of writing, Visa stock is up more than 20% versus its year-to-date low.

What Attracted Ackman to Visa Stock?

Pershing Square’s investment thesis on Visa stock center on its role as a capital-light toll taker that collects about 20 basis points on a typical transaction for authorization, merchant acceptance, fraud protection, and dispute resolution.

Bill Ackman estimates that cards still represent only about half of addressable consumer spending globally, implying substantial runway for volume growth.

Value-added services now generate some 30% of Visa’s revenue and are growing two to three times faster than traditional payment processing, which could diversify the company’s earning base away from simple card-swipe fees.

Risks Tied to Owning Visa Shares

The valuation argument is compelling on its face. Pershing Square estimates Visa trades at roughly 23 times forward earnings while projecting about 16% annual earnings growth over the next three to five years.

That said, risks the Ackman’s hedge fund is explicitly betting against include “stablecoin-driven” disintermediation, agentic AI reshaping consumer commerce, and renewed Washington scrutiny of payment economics.

But the billionaire’s view is that the market is pricing in disruption faster than the disruption is actually materializing.

He argues that if the fintech giant can convert AI-driven commerce, next-gen payment rails, and expanded security services into growth rather than threats, the current discount looks more like a rare entry point into one of the strongest franchises in global payments.

Where Options Data Suggest V Is Headed

From an option-data perspective, investors tracking Barchart data should note that Visa’s relatively compressed valuation multiple, combined with Ackman buying shares, could create a floor of institutional demand that supports near-term put-selling activity and bullish call spreads.

As of writing, the put-to-call ratio on contracts expiring mid-September sits at 0.78 – indicating a bullish skew – with the upper price indicating a 4.15% rally to $380 next month.

It’s also worth mentioning, however, that Pershing Square’s own funds are trailing the benchmark S&P 500 Index ($SPX) notably in 2026, with year-to-date returns of negative 4.3% versus positive 13.7% for the index, which tempers any reflexive urge to follow the trade without independent analysis.

How Wall Street Recommends Playing V Shares

Bill Ackman’s optimism is largely mirrored in the Wall Street consensus that sits at “Strong Buy.”

Analysts have a consensus $417 price target on Visa stock, which signals potential for a nearly 14% upside over the next 12 months.
