STERIS Stock: Is STE Underperforming the Healthcare Sector?

STERIS plc (STE), with a market capitalization of approximately $20.8 billion, is a global healthcare company focused on infection prevention and patient care. The Mentor, Ohio-based company provides consumable products, capital equipment, maintenance and repair services, sterilization solutions, laboratory testing, outsourced reprocessing, and operating room connectivity solutions.

Companies worth between $10 billion and $200 billion are generally classified as “large-cap stocks,” and STERIS fits this description, with its market capitalization reflecting its substantial size and established position within the healthcare sector. STERIS stands out by combining a leading position in infection prevention with a broad range of healthcare and sterilization products and services. Its trusted brand, loyal customer base, strong financial position, and strategic acquisitions strengthen its competitive position while supporting continued expansion and innovation.

Despite these strengths, STE has slipped 22% from its 52-week high of $269.44, reached on January 16, 2026. Over the past three months, STE stock has gained 2.1%, underperforming the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV), which has risen 9.7% over the same period.

Shares of STE have declined 17.1% year-to-date and 15.2% over the past year, considerably underperforming the ETF’s 8.3% year-to-date return and 22.4% gain over the same period.

STE shares have remained below their 50-day and 200-day moving averages since late August and early September, respectively, signaling a recent downtrend.

STERIS has lagged the broader market over the past year, and this may reflect slowing revenue growth and limited improvement in profitability. The company’s annualized revenue growth was 7.4% over the past two years, below its five-year trend, while its adjusted operating margin has remained broadly unchanged over the past five years. Its five-year average ROIC of 5.8% also points to relatively modest capital efficiency, which may have weighed on investor sentiment.

In the competitive healthcare sector, Abbott Laboratories (ABT) has trailed STE, declining 18.6% year-to-date and 22.3% over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts remain moderately bullish on STE’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating from the 9 analysts covering it. The mean price target of $263.75 suggests 25.4% upside from current price levels.
