A $20 Billion Reason Why Oracle Stock Is Down Today

Oracle (ORCL) stock tanked on Monday morning after the multinational technology giant revealed plans to raise about $20 billion through stock and bond sales. According to the regulatory filings, ORCL is seeking $10 billion from each offering, mostly to fund its ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) expansion.

The announcement arrives as Oracle shares are struggling to regain momentum, currently trading at half their YTD high from early June.

What the Capital Raise Means for Oracle Stock

For shareholders, the financing creates two major headwinds: issuing stock spreads future earnings across more shares, while additional borrowing brings interest costs.

It’s worth mentioning, however, that this is the capital raise Oracle outlined at its Oct. 28 investor day — not an unexpected $20 billion addition to the already disclosed plan.  In fact, management has capped additional capital-market fundraising through 2030 (excluding refinancing).

But ORCL shares sold off nonetheless on Monday because the filing follows a separate $20 billion equity raise completed in the company’s fiscal Q1, reinforcing that investors remain uncomfortable with the price of its AI expansion.

That said, a 1.63% dividend yield makes Oracle somewhat attractive as a long-term holding.

Should You Buy the Dip in ORCL Shares?

The case for buying the dip in Oracle stock rests primarily on the company eventually outgrowing its financing needs.

Management expects positive free cash flow (FCF) in the back half of fiscal 2028 and at least $30 billion the year after, when growth should become self-funded. This means the pullback could indeed be an opportunity for patient investors, especially since ORCL is currently trading at a rather attractive 20x forward earnings.

A stronger buy signal, however, will be evidence that spending is approaching its peak and customer payments are reducing Oracle’s dependence on outside funding.

Wall Street’s View on Oracle

Despite aggressive spending on AI buildout, Wall Street hasn’t thrown in the towel on ORCL stock yet.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on Oracle sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of about $241 indicating potential upside of nearly 100% from current levels.
