Ciena Corporation CIEN is driven by booming AI-led optical demand, robust backlog growth, extended customer commitments and additional supply agreements that strengthen the long-term growth outlook. In the fiscal third quarter, revenue jumped 37% year over year to $1.67 billion, while adjusted EPS surged 215% to $2.11. Revenue growth shows AI network spending is gaining momentum.
Industry demand remains robust, driven by AI, data center investments and network re-architecting. Ciena expects the total addressable market to double from $25 billion to $50 billion by 2029, with share gains expected. CIEN is leading in optical innovation with WaveLogic 6 Extreme and Hyper-Rail systems, capturing significant market share. Customer adoption is strong across markets, with high-speed optical solutions supporting AI and data center growth. Scale across technology is emerging as a major growth driver for CIEN, with early deployments linking data centers primarily in North America.
Ciena's preliminary fiscal 2027 outlook implies at least 30% revenue growth, adjusted gross margins of 45-46% and an adjusted operating margin of 25-27%. This outlook assumes that cloud providers continue AI infrastructure spending at levels consistent with recent public commitments, that optical component and substrate supply remains broadly stable and that there are no material changes in tariff, trade, or foreign-exchange conditions. Additionally, it raised fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $6.42 billion (+/- $50 million), implying 35% year-over-year growth at the midpoint.
A robust backlog is arguably the biggest driver of the 2027 outlook. Backlog increased to more than $10 billion, with demand outpacing supply. Most of the backlog is for 2027, indicating strong customer interest. Lead times drive backlog growth and supply agreements now secure key components through 2029, supporting capacity expansion.
