Can CAT's Quarry Automation Expansion Create New Growth Opportunities?

Caterpillar Inc. CAT is accelerating the adoption of autonomous technology in the quarry industry with the first deployment of its autonomous haulage solution on a Cat 775 truck. This milestone comes as Luck Stone moves forward with deploying CAT’s autonomous hauling technology at two additional Virginia quarries.

This follows the pilot run of autonomous hauling at Luck Stone’s Bull Run Quarry. Since going live in November 2024, autonomous trucks at Bull Run have hauled more than 3.5 million tons, providing Caterpillar with valuable real-world experience in applying autonomy to quarry operations.

Luck Stone, a division of Luck Companies, is the largest family-owned and operated producer of crushed stone, sand and gravel in the United States. The company offers more than 75 crushed stone products in a variety of grades, colors, sizes and gradations.

Caterpillar will now integrate autonomous hauling technology across two fleet of Cat 775 trucks at Luck Stone’s Boscobel and Bealeton operations. It will also provide complementary technologies supporting loaders and other site equipment, creating a broader technology ecosystem across the operations.

The expansion is strategically important for CAT as quarry operators are increasingly seeking technology that can improve production consistency, enhance safety and address labor constraints. Caterpillar’s autonomous trucks collectively have hauled more than 13 billion tons and traveled more than 455 million kilometers without reported injuries while operating.

The development underscores CAT’s efforts to move beyond traditional equipment sales by integrating automation, digital technologies and services into customer operations.

Peer Komatsu KMTUY has expanded its Smart Quarry Autonomous offering through a collaboration with Pronto, a cutting-edge Silicon Valley autonomous technology company. Smart Quarry Autonomous combines Komatsu’s experience in quarry equipment with advanced technology from Silicon Valley to deliver fully autonomous haulage. The system is designed for quarry environments, enabling driverless operation without the infrastructure, complexity and cost often associated with large-scale mining systems.

Volvo Group VLVLY is another peer developing autonomous transport solutions for controlled environments, including mines and quarries. With Autona/freight and Autona/earth, the company is solving real-world challenges, providing commercial autonomous vehicle technology that transforms the way we move goods on highways, in quarries and in mines.
