Can ExxonMobil Strengthen Its Long-Term Upstream Production Capacity?

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation XOM is well-positioned to expand long-term upstream production capacity, supported by elevated crude oil prices and a strong portfolio of low-cost production assets. Per the U.S. Energy Information Administration's short-term energy outlook, West Texas Intermediate crude prices are projected to average $88.21 per barrel in 2026 and $79.74 in 2027. This favorable pricing environment is expected to support ExxonMobil's cash generation, providing greater financial flexibility to invest in high-return drilling opportunities and expand its oil and gas production.

ExxonMobil's upstream production growth strategy centers on its low-cost assets in the Permian Basin and offshore Guyana, where operational efficiencies and technological advancements are strengthening production economics. The company expects its Permian production to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 9% through 2030, reaching nearly 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBoe/d).

Meanwhile, Guyana's offshore resources development remains a key growth driver, with the fifth floating production, storage and offloading (“FPSO”) vessel expected to add 50,000 barrels per day of production capacity following its planned startup in the fourth quarter of 2026. Low production costs and strong crude prices are likely to improve investment returns, encouraging development of these high-quality resources.

XOM aims to increase total upstream production to approximately 5.5 MMBoe/d by 2030, with advantaged assets accounting for nearly 65% of total output. The company's focus on capital discipline, structural cost reductions and efficient project execution is expected to strengthen profitability while supporting additional production capacity. Despite commodity price volatility and geopolitical uncertainties, ExxonMobil's low-cost asset base, favorable oil price outlook and expanding project pipeline provide a solid foundation for sustainable upstream production growth.

CVX & COP Target Higher Upstream Output

Chevron Corporation CVX and ConocoPhillips COP are pursuing upstream production growth by investing in high-quality resources, supported by a favorable crude oil pricing environment.

Chevron's acquisition of Hess, along with rising production from the Permian Basin and Gulf of America, is strengthening its position in key oil-producing regions. In the second quarter of 2026, the energy giant recorded a 20% year-over-year increase in worldwide production. CVX's emphasis on operational efficiency, capital discipline and cost optimization is expected to support additional production growth and improve long-term returns.

ConocoPhillips is strengthening its upstream portfolio through investments in the Lower 48 region and major development projects with long-term production potential. The upstream player has agreed to purchase a 42% stake in a joint venture involving oil fields in northern Iraq's Kirkuk region, expanding its access to additional hydrocarbon resources. COP’s Willow project in Alaska is expected to commence production in 2029, providing another avenue for expanding its upstream output and supporting cash generation.
