- Q2 product gross margin declined to 44.8% from 45.9%, primarily due to a less favorable systems revenue mix. Services gross margin fell to 9.3% from 13.9%, attributed to service-contract mix.
- Operating expenses rose 24.3% in Q2 to $56.0 million, including higher R&D, personnel and travel costs. First-half R&D expense increased 34.2% to $47.9 million.
- Other income was $0.9 million in Q2, compared with $5.9 million of other expense a year earlier; higher interest income and lower foreign-exchange losses were the main drivers.
Cash, liquidity and obligations
- At June 30, cash and cash equivalents were $132.5 million and short-term investments were $320.4 million; restricted cash was $6.7 million. Cash plus short-term investments totaled $452.9 million.
- First-half operating cash flow was $67.3 million, compared with $29.2 million in 2022. Investing activities used $73.2 million, including $5.2 million of capital expenditures and net purchases of short-term investments. Financing activities used $40.1 million, including $25.0 million for repurchases.

- Axcelis repurchased $25.0 million of shares in the first half. Its board-authorized program permits up to $100 million in repurchases.
Business outlook, commentary and risks
- Management reported continued strong first-half demand for capital equipment despite a downturn in the memory segment. It said supply-chain performance improved but had not fully recovered; 93% of first-half shipments went to mature foundry/logic customers.
- Management believes existing cash and cash equivalents will cover anticipated short- and long-term cash requirements. It cited business growth, potential organic and inorganic investment, and share repurchases as uses of cash. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.
- A 98,500-square-foot Beverly logistics and flex-manufacturing facility commenced under lease during Q2 and was expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2023. Axcelis recorded a $21.0 million right-of-use asset and a related $20.0 million liability.
- Customer concentration remains relevant: the ten largest customers generated 57.6% of first-half revenue. Two customers each represented more than 10% of first-half revenue, and two customers represented 12.5% and 11.5% of accounts receivable at quarter-end.
- Other areas to monitor include semiconductor capital-spending cycles, customer fab utilization affecting aftermarket demand, supply-chain constraints, foreign-exchange movements, and inventory exposure. A $10.6 million U.S. valuation allowance applies to certain tax credits and state net operating losses.
- The company reported no litigation believed likely to have a material adverse effect, no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors, and effective disclosure controls.
Key facts for investors to verify
- Whether systems demand and the mature-process customer mix remain supportive as semiconductor spending evolves, particularly in memory.
- Whether gross-margin pressure from product and service mix persists, and whether operating-expense growth moderates.
- Whether inventory growth converts into shipments and cash flow without increased obsolescence or reserve charges.
- Customer concentration, deferred-revenue conversion, and collection exposure as new equipment is delivered and accepted.
- The facility’s operational ramp and cash requirements, lease obligations, and continued share repurchases relative to investment needs.
