Operating expenses increased 13.2% to $40.8 million, but declined to 20.0% of revenue from 27.1% as sales grew. Other expense increased to $3.0 million, primarily because of foreign-exchange losses.

Material changes, outlook and risks
- Revenue growth was principally driven by higher system sales; total revenue rose 53.3% year over year. Asia Pacific revenue was $149.2 million, North America $24.9 million and Europe $29.4 million.
- Management provided no numerical full-year guidance in the supplied filing text. It cited continuing strong demand and ongoing supply-chain difficulties, and said it was working with customers to address logistical challenges.
- Customer concentration is significant: the ten largest customers generated 69.8% of revenue. Two customers represented 15.0% and 11.1% of quarterly revenue; three customers accounted for 46.0% of receivables at quarter-end.
- Export-control licensing is required for U.S. shipments to major Chinese customer SMIC; evolving restrictions could delay future shipments. The company also noted trade tensions and COVID-related logistical challenges.
- An international tax audit began during the quarter. Axcelis recorded a $0.7 million liability for tax positions it determined may not be sustained. It also had an $8.6 million valuation allowance against certain U.S. tax credits and state net operating losses.
- Warranty liability increased to $8.0 million from $4.7 million a year earlier. The company reported no litigation believed likely to have a material adverse effect and no material changes to its previously disclosed risk factors or market-risk information.
Important facts for investors to verify

- Inventory and receivables growth, and whether working-capital requirements affect cash generation as the business expands.
- Progress and eventual resolution of the international tax audit and realizability of deferred tax assets.
- Future share repurchases, lease obligations and the availability and terms of the revolving credit facility.
