- Gross margin fell mainly because of supply-chain-related costs, with customer/product mix and regional revenue mix also contributing. Network Solutions gross margin declined; Services & Support gross margin improved.
- SG&A was $27.9 million, up 1.7%; R&D was $26.5 million, down 3.7%. The quarter included a $3.4 million net investment loss, versus a $1.0 million gain in Q1 2021, primarily reflecting changes in securities’ fair values. Other income of $2.0 million in Q1 2021 became expense of $0.2 million.
- Income tax benefit was $2.4 million. The effective tax rate reflected U.S. tax rules requiring capitalization of R&D costs beginning in 2022 and related valuation-allowance effects. Deferred tax assets totaled $67.6 million, with a $58.6 million valuation allowance.
Balance sheet, liquidity and capital
- Total assets were $589.1 million and stockholders’ equity was $352.3 million at March 31, 2022. Inventory increased 22.3% from year-end to $171.1 million, reflecting strategic buffers, component lead times and new-product ramps.
- Cash plus short-term investments provided $54.4 million of available short-term liquidity; $45.1 million was held by foreign subsidiaries. Long-term investments were $67.7 million; combined short- and long-term investments were $68.1 million.
- No borrowings remained under the $10 million Cadence revolving facility at quarter-end: $8 million was drawn and repaid during the quarter. The company reported covenant compliance. A new $25 million secured Wells Fargo facility was entered into on April 1, 2022, after quarter-end, maturing April 1, 2023.
- Operating cash flow decreased $5.8 million year over year, primarily from inventory and other-receivable increases, partly offset by higher accounts payable. Capital expenditures were $1.5 million; dividends paid were $4.4 million, or $0.09 per share.
- Accounts receivable DSO decreased to 87 days from 95 at year-end. Performance-bond commitments were $20.9 million; $18.0 million of investments/cash secured a customer letter of credit. Management considered guarantee default remote and reported compliance with the letter-of-credit requirements.
Outlook, material developments and risks
- Management reported strong demand and significant year-over-year bookings growth, driven by fiber-access platforms, in-home service delivery and SaaS applications. It expects growth to accelerate and sees a favorable longer-term outlook, but gave no numeric revenue or earnings guidance.
- Management cautioned that near-term revenue growth and profitability could remain pressured by semiconductor and component shortages, extended lead times, freight constraints, inflation and higher input costs. These conditions have increased inventory and reduced gross margins; the duration and severity remain uncertain.
- International revenue increased 35.1% to $55.5 million and represented 35.9% of sales, versus 32.2%. Foreign-exchange movements reduced year-over-year sales by approximately $2.3 million.
- The proposed ADTRAN–ADVA business combination remained pending. ADTRAN stockholders approved it; the exchange offer was accepted for approximately 66% of ADVA voting shares. U.S. and U.K. reviews were completed, while German foreign-investment review remained outstanding. The company anticipated closing around mid-2022, subject to approvals and other conditions, and estimated a further $10.0 million in transaction costs.
- Other disclosed risks include customer and supplier concentration, inventory obsolescence, competition and margin variability, foreign exchange, international operations, COVID-19 effects, cybersecurity and ERP implementation. The shareholder derivative action was dismissed without prejudice in February 2022. Management said other legal matters were not expected to have a material adverse effect.
- After quarter-end, the board declared another $0.09-per-share quarterly dividend, payable June 2, 2022. Management stated that available cash, investments, operating cash flow and borrowing access should cover operating and capital needs for at least 12 months.
