Gross-margin improvement was attributed primarily to a greater amount of software sales recognized on a net basis. SG&A dollars rose modestly, while the ratio to sales increased as revenue declined. Higher interest income, driven by higher cash balances and rates on short-term investments, partly offset lower operating income.

Segments and material period changes

  • Enterprise Solutions: Sales of $282.7 million, down 10.0%; operating income was $5.8 million versus $6.5 million.
  • Business Solutions: Sales of $255.9 million, down 6.3%; operating income was $15.8 million versus $16.6 million.
  • Public Sector Solutions: Sales of $93.5 million, down 33.4%; operating loss was $5.4 million versus $0.03 million of operating income. Federal sales fell $39.5 million, including because two large federal projects fulfilled in Q1 2023 did not recur.
  • Across product categories, notebooks/mobility, software, net/com products, accessories, other hardware/services, and servers/storage declined; desktop sales increased.
  • No restructuring charges were recorded in Q1 2024, compared with $0.9 million in Q1 2023. The company is evaluating additional restructuring activities for Q2 2024 and beyond.

Cash, liquidity, and debt

  • At March 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents were $147.6 million and short-term investments were $204.4 million; total current assets were $1,023.4 million and current liabilities were $289.8 million.
  • Total assets were $1,161.1 million; total liabilities were $308.4 million; stockholders’ equity was $852.7 million.
  • Operating cash flow of $57.3 million primarily reflected a $79.3 million decrease in receivables, partly offset by a $45.1 million decrease in accounts payable. Management attributed these movements principally to collection and payment timing and lower business activity.
  • Investing cash outflow was $51.6 million, including net purchases of U.S. Treasury securities and $1.6 million of capital expenditures. Financing cash outflow was $3.1 million, including $2.6 million of dividends.
  • No borrowings were outstanding under the $50 million accounts-receivable-backed credit facility, which expires March 31, 2025; the full facility was available. The company was in compliance with its covenants. The facility may be increased to $80 million subject to approval and conditions.
  • Cash conversion cycle was 53 days, compared with 65 days a year earlier, reflecting improved collections and lower inventory days, among other factors.

Outlook, risks, and other notable matters

  • Management said available cash, investments, operating cash generation, and credit capacity should meet working-capital, capital-expenditure, and other needs for at least the next 12 months and beyond. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.
  • Management cautioned that weaker IT-product demand or adverse macroeconomic conditions—including inflation and higher interest rates—could materially affect operating cash flow. Other cited risks include competition and pricing pressure, supplier concentration or direct vendor sales, shipping disruptions and costs, personnel retention, and cybersecurity and IT-system risks.
  • The company depends on suppliers and competes with manufacturers’ direct-sales efforts; it believes tailored, integrated solutions and higher-margin services can help differentiate its offering. Management also noted that service-engineer hiring costs could weigh on results if service revenue does not grow sufficiently.
  • Routine legal proceedings and tax, employment, and other audits were disclosed; management does not expect them to have a material adverse effect. Short-term U.S. Treasury investments had $78,000 of unrealized losses at quarter-end.
  • The board declared a $0.10-per-share quarterly dividend on May 1, 2024, payable May 29 to holders of record May 14. Future dividends remain subject to board discretion.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether sales declines—particularly in Public Sector Solutions and federal projects—continue, and whether demand improves.
  • Whether the higher gross margin from software net presentation is sustainable and translates into stronger operating profit despite SG&A pressure.
  • Whether working-capital cash-flow gains reflect repeatable collection performance or primarily timing, and how receivables and payables change in subsequent quarters.
  • Progress and potential costs of any additional restructuring, and whether service investments generate sufficient higher-margin revenue.
  • Compliance with credit-facility covenants, investment liquidity and valuation, and the board’s future dividend and repurchase decisions.
