Total assets were $636.0 million and stockholders’ equity was $595.9 million. The balance sheet lists no borrowings or other interest-bearing debt; current liabilities were $34.0 million. Changes and operating drivers
- Infusion therapy revenue rose 10.5% to $65.0 million, supported in part by SwabCap sales following its 2015 acquisition. Critical care revenue fell 5.1% to $13.0 million, primarily due to manufacturing issues that management said were corrected late in the quarter. Oncology revenue grew 34.5% to $11.7 million, reflecting higher U.S. sales of ChemoLock and ChemoClave.
- Gross margin improved due to favorable product mix and foreign-exchange effects on operating costs. SG&A increased $1.8 million, partly from compensation and acquisition-related transition services; R&D declined $1.0 million, mainly from lower Cogent 2-in-1 monitoring-system project costs.
- Operating income comparisons benefited from the absence of the $7.1 million Hospira legal-settlement charge recorded in Q1 2015. The 2015 settlement arose from an arbitration award and associated legal fees; the filing says these amounts were paid.
- Q1 2016 operating cash flow was $14.8 million. Working-capital uses included an $8.0 million reduction in accrued liabilities, largely from payment of 2015 bonuses, and higher inventory and prepaid expenses. Investing cash flow was $0.6 million; financing cash flow was negative $7.8 million, including $16.9 million of treasury-stock purchases.
Outlook, risks and contingencies
- Management estimated 2016 capital expenditures of $18–$20 million, including manufacturing investments and expansion of the Mexico facility in connection with the planned Slovakia plant closure. The Slovakia assets were held for sale, and sale completion was expected in Q3 2016.
- Management said available cash, investments and expected operating cash generation should fund operations for the next 12 months. It reported $34.1 million of cash held by foreign subsidiaries that it expected to keep permanently invested outside the U.S.
- Hospira, now a Pfizer subsidiary, represented 34% of Q1 revenue and 34% of accounts receivable at March 31. Agreements extend through December 2018. ICU Medical cautioned that a deterioration or change in this relationship, or reduced demand from major customers, could adversely affect results.
- Other stated risks include manufacturing or supply interruptions, product development and regulatory clearance (including pending FDA 510(k) clearance for the Cogent system), competition and pricing pressure, foreign-exchange exposure, and customer concentration. The company does not hedge its foreign-currency exposures. Management reported no material change in previously disclosed risk factors and no material adverse impact expected from pending routine legal proceedings.
- The effective tax rate was 34% in Q1 2016 versus 16% in Q1 2015; the prior-year rate reflected tax benefits and other items. The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance.
