Net income was $197.3 million and diluted EPS $2.39, compared with $68.5 million and $0.83. Material changes, outlook and notable items
- Management attributed 2017 growth to a stronger economy, market-share gains, tighter industry capacity, increased freight density and favorable pricing. Higher density and yield, alongside cost management, supported the improved operating ratio.
- Fuel costs rose: average diesel cost per gallon increased 23.5%, and gallons consumed increased 4.3%. Fuel surcharges rose to 11.1% of revenue from 9.5%; surcharges may lag fuel-cost changes and do not recover all fuel expense. The company does not hedge diesel prices.
- The Tax Act generated a provisional $104.9 million tax benefit in 2017. Management estimated a 2018 effective tax rate of approximately 26%–27%, subject to further tax guidance and finalization of estimates.
- Management estimated 2018 capital expenditures of approximately $510 million: $200 million for service centers, $265 million for tractors and trailers, and $45 million for technology and other assets. It expected to fund spending primarily from operating cash flow, existing cash and, if needed, revolver borrowings.
- Risks include intense price and service competition; driver and technician availability and labor costs; fuel price and supply volatility; economic and seasonal demand changes, severe weather and natural disasters; regulatory costs, including ELD requirements; insurance claims; cybersecurity and technology disruption; and capital requirements.
- The company disclosed an EPA notice alleging California diesel-filter regulatory violations and expected monetary sanctions exceeding $100,000; it did not consider a material financial effect reasonably possible. It stated other ordinary-course legal matters were not expected to have a material adverse effect.
- The financial statements received an unqualified audit opinion, and management and the auditor reported effective internal control over financial reporting.
