Revenue and segment results

  • Equipment and services revenue was $8.316 billion, up $532 million; licensing revenue was $1.619 billion, down $60 million.
  • QCT revenue rose 7% to $8.423 billion; segment earnings before tax (EBT) increased to $2.593 billion from $2.183 billion, and EBT margin rose to 31% from 28%.
  • Within QCT, handset revenue increased to $6.687 billion from $5.754 billion; automotive revenue rose to $598 million from $456 million; IoT revenue fell to $1.138 billion from $1.682 billion.
  • Management attributed handset growth to higher chipset shipments, customer inventory normalization and earlier device launches, as well as higher revenue per chipset. IoT weakness reflected soft demand and elevated customer inventories. Automotive growth reflected stronger connectivity and digital-cockpit demand.
  • QTL revenue declined 4% to $1.460 billion and EBT declined to $1.080 billion from $1.117 billion. The revenue decline primarily reflected the prior-year recognition of upfront fees under a Nokia license agreement.

Liquidity, debt and capital returns

  • Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $12.054 billion at December 24, 2023, up $730 million from fiscal year-end. Balance-sheet cash and cash equivalents were $8.133 billion; marketable securities were $3.921 billion.
  • Total debt was $15.480 billion, including $914 million of short-term debt due May 2024. The credit facility was undrawn and no commercial paper was outstanding. Cash and marketable securities were less than total debt.
  • Current assets were $23.439 billion and current liabilities $9.169 billion. Inventories were $6.247 billion, down from $6.422 billion at September 24, 2023.
  • Operating cash flow was $2.949 billion. Investing activities used $1.256 billion, including $1.452 billion of purchases of marketable securities and $214 million of capital expenditures. Financing activities used $2.041 billion, including $895 million of dividends and $784 million for repurchases of 6.37 million shares.
  • Qualcomm paid $1.0 billion of previously postponed U.S. federal tax payments, reducing operating cash flow. It announced a $0.80-per-share dividend payable March 21, 2024. At quarter-end, $4.4 billion remained authorized under its $10 billion repurchase program.

Material changes and unusual items

  • Revenue and earnings improved year over year, mainly due to QCT handset and automotive growth; IoT and QTL revenue declined. Gross margin remained 57%.
  • Research and development expense decreased to $2.096 billion from $2.251 billion. Management attributed the reduction mainly to lower employee-related costs following fiscal 2023 restructuring actions, which were substantially completed by this quarter; it said those actions supported continued investment in growth and diversification opportunities.
  • Investment and other income, net, increased to $212 million from $76 million, primarily reflecting higher interest and dividend income and higher gains on deferred-compensation plan assets. Income tax expense was $151 million versus $98 million; the effective tax rate was 5% versus 4%, with $79 million of net discrete tax benefits in the current quarter and $150 million in the prior-year quarter.
  • Net loss from discontinued operations was $44 million versus $38 million, relating to Veoneer Non-Arriver businesses. SSW Partners agreed in December 2023 to sell the Restraint Control Systems business; completion was expected in early calendar 2024, subject to approvals and other conditions.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

  • No numeric revenue or EPS guidance for the next quarter is stated in the supplied filing text. Management expects certain customers to continue drawing down elevated inventories, which may weigh on revenue, results and cash flow; Qualcomm also described its own inventory as elevated and warned of possible excess or obsolete inventory charges if demand is overestimated.
  • Management expects product cost increases from certain key wafer suppliers and continued intense competition, including customer vertical integration. It views 5G, automotive and IoT as longer-term growth opportunities, while noting that investments may not deliver expected returns. Management stated that available liquidity, expected operating cash flow and financing activities should meet working-capital and other requirements for at least the next 12 months and thereafter for the foreseeable future.
  • Customer concentration is significant: three customers/licensees each represented at least 10% of revenue in the quarter, at 25%, 18% and 14%. The filing masks their identities. Qualcomm also highlighted exposure to China, U.S./China trade and national-security tensions, customer development of competing chips, semiconductor cyclicality, supplier concentration and geopolitical disruption, including Taiwan-related supply risks.
  • Licensing renewals and royalty disputes remain important risks. The company is negotiating with several key OEMs whose agreements expire in early fiscal 2025 and with an unlicensed China-headquartered OEM selling mainly in developing regions.
  • Major legal matters include the Arm/Nuvia dispute, with trial scheduled for September 23, 2024; a securities class action, with trial scheduled for October 28, 2024; and an appeal in a U.S. consumer class action after final judgment for Qualcomm. Qualcomm recorded no accrual for the pending matters described, saying losses were reasonably possible but not probable and any loss range could not be reasonably estimated. An unfavorable outcome could materially affect results, financial condition or cash flows.
  • Qualcomm estimated its fiscal 2024 annual effective tax rate at 7%, below the U.S. federal statutory rate, principally reflecting FDII and research-credit benefits. The filing notes potential adverse effects from tax-law changes and future reductions to FDII benefits.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether customer inventory drawdowns persist and how QCT handset, automotive and IoT demand develops, particularly given elevated company inventory.
  • Customer/licensee concentration, the timing and terms of expiring license agreements, and progress with the unlicensed China-based OEM.
  • Developments in the Arm/Nuvia and securities litigation, other regulatory or licensing challenges, and any change in the company’s loss assessments.
  • Cash generation after tax payments and capital returns, the May 2024 short-term debt maturity, and the balance of debt relative to cash and marketable securities.
  • Whether the 7% estimated annual tax rate and management’s liquidity expectations remain achievable.
