- Cash was $237 million and short-term investments were $268 million at quarter-end, versus $297 million and $271 million, respectively, at year-end 2021.
- Short-term debt was $1.116 billion, current long-term debt $1.728 billion, and long-term debt $6.763 billion. Total reported debt across these categories was approximately $9.607 billion.
- Current assets were $8.194 billion and current liabilities $8.256 billion. Eaton reported $1.096 billion of commercial paper outstanding, no revolver borrowings, and $2.5 billion of revolving credit facilities available. It stated it was in compliance with debt covenants and believed liquidity was sufficient for operating needs and scheduled debt payments.
- Operating cash flow fell mainly because working capital used $785 million, compared with $108 million in Q1 2021; higher activity increased receivables and inventory. Investing cash outflow was $762 million, including $612 million for Royal Power Solutions. Financing cash inflow was $652 million, including a $1.105 billion net increase in short-term debt. Cash declined $60 million during the quarter.
Material changes, outlook, and risks
- Electrical Americas and Electrical Global benefited from broad-based end-market strength; Aerospace improved with commercial aviation recovery. Vehicle results reflected mixed markets, including weakness in global light vehicles. Supply-chain disruptions, shortages, inflation, labor constraints, and certain plant shutdowns continued to affect operations.
- Q1 included a $24 million pre-tax gain from final post-closing adjustments on the Hydraulics sale. Intangible amortization rose to $128 million from $92 million, primarily reflecting acquired businesses. The effective tax rate was 13.9%, compared with 14.7%, mainly due to excess tax benefits on employee share-based payments.
- No formal full-year earnings guidance is stated in the provided filing text. Eaton expected approximately $650 million in 2022 capital expenditures. It expected another $40 million of restructuring charges in 2022, with total program charges estimated at $350 million and mature-year savings of $250 million when fully implemented in 2023.
- The Board renewed authorization for up to $5 billion of share repurchases over three years; $86 million was spent repurchasing 0.6 million shares in Q1. The quarterly dividend was raised 7% to $0.81 per share, and the company said it intended to continue quarterly dividends in 2022.
- Management identified supply-chain availability and pricing, inflation in materials, labor and logistics, and the ability to recover costs through pricing as risks. It said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had not materially affected results to date, but future impacts were uncertain.
- Legal matters include two Brazilian tax disputes over historical goodwill amortization, with alleged deficiencies plus interest and penalties of $136 million and $150 million, respectively. A first-level judicial decision in one case was unfavorable in April 2022; Eaton said it would continue to challenge the assessment. The company stated it did not expect the cases to materially affect the financial statements, while noting outcomes remain uncertain.
- Other unusual financial items included $14 million of pension settlement losses and pension remeasurement effects recorded in other comprehensive income. The filing reported no material change in market-risk exposures and no material change in risk factors except the supply-chain, inflation, and Ukraine-related disclosures.
