Operating margin was approximately 27.2% in 2023 versus 30.9% in 2022; net income attributable to common stockholders was approximately 8.1% of revenue versus 15.2%. Consolidated copper unit net cash costs rose to $1.61 per pound from $1.50. At year-end, reported net debt was $3.6 billion, or $0.8 billion excluding net debt associated with the Indonesia smelter projects. The latter is a company-defined non-GAAP measure.

Material changes versus 2022

  • Revenue was broadly stable, but operating income fell about 12% and net income attributable to common stockholders fell about 47%. FCX attributed the earnings decline primarily to its PT-FI economic interest falling from approximately 81% through 2022 to 48.76% beginning in 2023, as well as increased production costs.
  • PT-FI’s higher copper and gold production did not translate into higher sales: Indonesia copper sales declined to 1.525 billion pounds from 1.582 billion, partly because the PT Smelting arrangement changed to tolling, affecting the timing of sales recognition. FCX consolidated PT-FI in both periods.
  • Higher gold and molybdenum realized prices partly offset lower copper prices and lower copper and gold sales volumes. Consolidated average realized gold and molybdenum prices increased to $1,972 per ounce and $24.64 per pound, respectively.
  • Production and delivery costs rose to $13.627 billion from $13.070 billion; FCX cited higher operating rates, commodity-related costs, labor, maintenance and supplies. Capital expenditures increased about 39%, primarily reflecting Indonesia smelter construction and Grasberg underground development.
  • Cash and cash equivalents decreased by $3.388 billion, while debt declined by $1.198 billion. Operating cash flow less capital expenditures was approximately $455 million, compared with approximately $1.670 billion in 2022.

Guidance, management commentary, risks and unusual items

  • For 2024, FCX projected copper sales of 4.090 billion pounds, gold sales of 1.975 million ounces and molybdenum sales of 85 million pounds. It expects copper production to exceed sales, including an approximately 90-million-pound sales deferral at PT-FI pending domestic processing.
  • 2024 outlook assumes average prices of $3.75 per pound for copper, $2,000 per ounce for gold and $19 per pound for molybdenum. On those assumptions, management estimated operating cash flow of $5.8 billion, consolidated capital expenditures of $4.6 billion and copper unit net cash costs of $1.60 per pound. These are projections, not guarantees.
  • Management expects the Manyar smelter to reach mechanical completion in May 2024, with ramp-up through year-end; the precious metals refinery was also expected to be commissioned in 2024. Indonesia smelter-project capital spending was projected at $1.0 billion for 2024, excluding capitalized interest and estimated commissioning and owner’s costs.
  • Indonesia export permits for copper concentrates and anode slimes were valid through May 2024. Further exports require government approvals; restrictions, delays, duties or smelter ramp-up problems could affect sales, production and costs. PT-FI’s IUPK mining rights extend through 2031, with an extension through 2041 conditional on obligations including domestic smelting and fiscal requirements.
  • PT-FI paid $324 million in export duties in 2023. A revised Indonesian regulation set a 2024 duty rate of 7.5% for projects with smelter progress above 90%, but FCX said PT-FI would initially be subject to 10% pending a revised export license and continued to dispute the regulation’s application.
  • Unusual 2023 net charges of $373 million, or $0.26 per share, primarily related to environmental obligations and litigation reserves, contested Peruvian tax rulings, an oil and gas property impairment and a potential Indonesian administrative fine; partly offset by correction of inputs in PT-FI’s historical asset retirement model. The filing also reports a $65 million charge associated with proposed talc litigation settlement terms.
  • Recorded environmental obligations were $1.9 billion and asset retirement obligations were $3.0 billion at year-end. FCX expected approximately $0.6 billion of environmental capital expenditures and other environmental costs in 2024.
  • Major risks include commodity-price volatility; operating, underground-mine and tailings hazards; water availability and water-rights litigation; environmental remediation and regulatory costs; labor availability and negotiations; social and political disruption in operating regions; and cybersecurity. An August 2023 cyber incident temporarily disrupted parts of operations, but the company reported no material financial impact.
  • The Board declared 2023 dividends totaling $0.60 per share. Management anticipated a total $0.60 per share for 2024 based on then-current conditions; dividends remain discretionary. No shares were repurchased under the program in 2023.
  • Management reported effective internal control over financial reporting, and Ernst & Young issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • How much of the 2023 earnings decline reflects the PT-FI ownership economics change, versus operating costs, shipment timing and other items?
  • Whether Indonesian export approvals, duties and smelter commissioning proceed on schedule, and how these affect PT-FI sales and cash generation.
  • Whether 2024 projected volumes, unit costs, operating cash flow and capital spending remain achievable under actual commodity prices and operating conditions.
  • The funding, timing and potential additional costs of the Manyar smelter, precious metals refinery, Grasberg development and other growth projects.
  • Developments in environmental reserves, reclamation obligations, Peruvian and Indonesian tax disputes, U.S. water-rights adjudications and other contingencies.
  • The availability of cash for parent-company uses, given restricted export proceeds, noncontrolling-interest distributions, planned investment and upcoming debt maturities.
