Operating margin was approximately 11.1% versus 12.2%; net margin was approximately 9.0% versus 11.1%. The effective tax rate rose to 17.5% from 4.1%, mainly because the prior-year benefit from excess stock-compensation tax benefits was smaller in 2019 and state tax expense increased.

  • Revenue mix: Card revenues and other fees were $459.4 million (−5%); processing and settlement service revenues were $287.1 million (+16%); interchange was $330.2 million (+6%); and net interest income was $31.9 million (+34%). Interchange represented 29.8% of operating revenue.
  • Operating drivers: Cash transfers increased 9.0%; tax refunds processed increased 3.2%; gross dollar volume grew 8.6%; purchase volume rose 3.9%. Active accounts declined 5.6% to 5.04 million, while direct-deposit active accounts grew 4.9% to 2.14 million.
  • Segment results: Account Services revenue was $843.0 million, essentially flat, while operating income fell to $146.6 million from $200.2 million. Processing and Settlement Services revenue increased to $296.7 million from $253.4 million and operating income rose to $94.0 million from $74.3 million.
  • Balance sheet at year-end: Unrestricted cash and cash equivalents were $1,063.4 million; available-for-sale investments totaled $277.4 million; total assets were $2,460.6 million; deposits were $1,175.3 million; and stockholders’ equity was $927.4 million. Debt was $35.0 million, with $65.0 million available under the $100 million revolving facility.
  • Cash flow and capital allocation: Investing activities used $153.9 million, including $78.2 million for property and equipment. Financing activities used $65.1 million, including $100 million for share repurchases and $60 million to repay the term loan, partly offset by increased deposits and $35 million of revolver borrowings. Green Dot ended the year with $50 million remaining in its authorized repurchase program.

Q4 2019 and changes versus comparable periods

Q4 revenue was $249.3 million, up 1.7% from $245.1 million in Q4 2018. Operating expenses increased to $249.6 million from $229.7 million, producing an operating loss of $0.2 million versus operating income of $15.4 million. Q4 net income was $1.7 million versus $14.3 million; a $2.0 million income tax benefit partly offset the pretax loss. Diluted EPS was $0.03 versus $0.26.

For the full year, growth in platform-related money transfers, Simply Paid disbursements and tax processing was partly offset by lower Account Services revenue, including fewer active consumer accounts and reduced maintenance fees. Higher marketing, revenue-sharing commissions and transaction processing costs outpaced revenue growth. Lower compensation expense, including reduced stock-based compensation, and the nonrecurrence of a prior-year $13.5 million tax-business earn-out expense partly offset those increases. Net interest income benefited from higher rates and average balances, but management cautioned that rate reductions could pressure future interest income.

Outlook, risks and notable items

  • Outlook: The filing does not provide a clear numerical FY2020 earnings or revenue forecast. Management said it expected capital expenditures to be similar to 2019 and believed available liquidity, operating cash flow and borrowing capacity would meet needs for at least 12 months.
  • Walmart: Walmart generated 34% of FY2019 revenue. The renewed MoneyCard agreement runs from January 1, 2020 through January 31, 2027, with a conditional one-year renewal option. The commission rate payable to Walmart increased, and management expected this to weigh on 2020 sales and marketing expenses.
  • New investment: In January 2020, Green Dot and Walmart established TailFin Labs. Green Dot holds a 20% interest and committed to contribute $35 million annually for five years. Green Dot also issued Walmart 975,000 restricted shares, vesting monthly through December 2022.
  • Leadership and litigation: The founder/CEO retired effective year-end; the company reported searches for permanent CEO and CFO replacements. Securities and derivative suits filed in December 2019 and February 2020 allege misleading statements concerning customer acquisition strategy and financial performance. The company said the outcome and potential impact could not yet be determined.
  • Regulatory and business risks: Green Dot is subject to extensive banking and consumer regulation. Most bank deposits were classified as brokered; losing “well-capitalized” status could constrain deposit-taking. Other key risks include Walmart and tax-partner concentration, competition and declining consumer active accounts, fraud and overdrafts, cybersecurity and service interruptions, and sensitivity of interest income to rates. Management noted possible business effects from the emerging coronavirus outbreak in China were uncertain.
  • Capital and controls: Green Dot and Green Dot Bank were reported as well-capitalized at year-end and above required capital buffers. Management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective; the auditor issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and controls. The auditor identified revenue recognition as a critical audit matter, particularly transaction volume, systems and assumptions used for average card life.
