Sales and earnings gains were led by OSB pricing and volumes, with higher Siding sales and lower costs also contributing. SG&A was $69 million versus $66 million. The effective tax rate was 28%, compared with 5%; the 2024 tax provision was $41 million versus $1 million.
Segment results
- Siding: Sales of $361 million, up 9%; Adjusted EBITDA of $90 million, up 34%. Average selling price rose 5% and shipments rose 4%. Management cited price increases, higher volumes, and a $10 million reduction in freight, raw material, and labor costs, partly offset by $7 million higher mill overhead.
- OSB: Sales of $313 million, up 65%; Adjusted EBITDA of $90 million versus $5 million. Structural Solutions prices and shipments increased 24% and 36%; commodity OSB prices and shipments increased 49% and 9%. Management attributed the sales increase mainly to higher prices and volumes, partly offset by mill costs.
- LPSA: Sales of $47 million, down 15%; Adjusted EBITDA of $10 million, down 19%. Lower selling prices and unfavorable currency effects outweighed modestly higher volumes.
Liquidity, debt, and capital allocation
Cash and cash equivalents were $244 million at March 31, 2024, up from $222 million at year-end 2023. Total current assets were $842 million and current liabilities were $254 million. Long-term debt was $347 million, consisting of 3.625% senior notes due 2029; the notes’ estimated fair value was $319 million. LP had no borrowings under its $550 million revolving credit facility, which matures November 29, 2028, and was in compliance with its financial covenants. It also reported $14 million of standby letters of credit outstanding.
Q1 financing uses included $19 million of dividends ($0.26 per share) and $13 million of share repurchases. The company reported $187 million remaining under its $600 million repurchase authorization at March 31. From April 1 through May 7, it repurchased another 0.5 million shares for $37 million.
Changes, outlook, and risks
- U.S. single-family housing starts were 27% higher year over year in Q1, while multifamily starts were about 37% lower. Management said repair and remodeling activity appeared to be moderating and noted uncertainty around future housing demand.
- No quantified full-year financial guidance is provided in the supplied filing text. Management expects to fund capital expenditures over at least the next 12 months with cash on hand, operating cash flow, and available revolver capacity as needed.
- OSB is a commodity business exposed to supply, demand, and volatile market pricing. Other notable risks include cyclicality in housing and repair/remodel markets; raw-material, energy, and freight costs; foreign-exchange movements; operational disruptions; and regulatory and environmental matters.
- Environmental reserves were $26 million, including a $25 million long-term portion. Management cautioned that estimates are uncertain and eventual costs could materially exceed accrued amounts. It considered warranty reserves adequate, while noting future changes may be required. No long-lived-asset impairment indicators were identified at quarter-end.
- Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter. The filing reported no material changes to the risk factors in the 2023 Form 10-K.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether OSB pricing and volumes remain strong; OSB’s commodity exposure can make earnings sensitive to market cycles.
- Whether Siding growth and cost savings persist, and whether softer LPSA pricing and currency pressures continue.
- Cash conversion and working-capital movements: operating cash flow improved substantially, but receivables and inventory increased during the quarter.
- The scale and timing of capital spending, dividends, and repurchases, including the post-quarter $37 million repurchase.
- Potential changes in environmental, warranty, or other contingency estimates, which management says may be materially different from current accruals.
All figures are in U.S. dollars. Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted diluted EPS are non-GAAP measures; the company cautions they are not substitutes for GAAP results and may not be comparable with similarly titled measures at other companies.
