Gross margin expanded 320 basis points, attributed to pricing, cost-saving initiatives and a mix shift toward higher-margin industrial equipment and direct sales. S&A expense increased $8.2 million to $89.9 million, driven mainly by annualized growth resources and enterprise initiatives; R&D rose to $10.1 million from $7.9 million. The effective tax rate decreased to 19.1% from 24.1%, primarily due to discrete share-based compensation tax benefits. Net interest expense fell to $2.3 million from $3.7 million as average borrowings declined, despite a higher average interest rate.

Liquidity, debt and cash flows

Cash and restricted cash was $88.8 million at quarter-end, down from $117.1 million at December 31, 2023. Current assets were $561.1 million and current liabilities $260.4 million; the reported current ratio was 2.2. Total debt was $214.6 million, including $125.0 million of revolver borrowings and $88.8 million of term loans. The company reported $321.8 million of unused revolving capacity and a 25.8% debt-to-capital ratio. Weighted-average debt cost was approximately 6.5%, or 5.1% net of specified swap instruments.

Operating cash flow fell to $2.9 million, with working-capital use—particularly bonus payments and ERP modernization spending—partly offset by operating performance. Investing outflows were $60.6 million, mainly reflecting the Brain Corp investment ($32.1 million) and TCS acquisition payments net of cash acquired ($25.5 million). Financing provided $26.9 million, including net borrowings and stock-option exercise proceeds; dividends paid were $5.3 million.
