Xperi Inc. 10-Q Summary
Reporting period: Quarter ended September 30, 2023; filed November 13, 2023. Xperi is a standalone consumer and entertainment technology company, with revenue across Pay-TV, Consumer Electronics, Connected Car and Media Platform. Comparisons with 2022 require caution: the spin-off from Adeia was completed October 1, 2022, so prior-period results include pre-separation reporting and allocated parent-company costs.

Revenue increased 7% in Q3 and 5% year to date. The Q3 operating loss was far lower than the prior-year loss, largely because Q3 2022 included a $354.0 million goodwill impairment; 2023 included no goodwill impairment. Excluding depreciation and intangible amortization, cost of revenue was 20% of revenue in Q3 2023 versus 26% in Q3 2022, equivalent to a 80% versus 74% gross margin on that basis. The company remained loss-making.
Revenue mix, Q3 2023: Pay-TV $60.3 million; Consumer Electronics $32.3 million; Connected Car $23.4 million; Media Platform $14.4 million. Media Platform growth reflected Vewd smart-TV software and middleware; Connected Car growth included HD Radio, audio solutions and DTS AutoStage. Pay-TV and Consumer Electronics were lower year to date than in 2022.
Cash, liquidity and debt: Cash and equivalents were $131.5 million at September 30, down $28.6 million from year-end 2022. Current assets were $295.8 million and current liabilities $151.5 million; the reported current ratio was 2.0. The company had $50.0 million of debt outstanding, a 6% senior unsecured note due July 2025, with quarterly cash interest and a $50.0 million balloon payment at maturity. Nine-month capital expenditures were $9.4 million. Stock-based compensation was $51.7 million for the nine months, up from $29.8 million.
Changes, outlook and risks
- Q3 revenue growth was led by Media Platform, up $4.9 million, and Connected Car, up $3.2 million. For the nine months, Media Platform increased $15.4 million, substantially reflecting Vewd, acquired in July 2022; Connected Car grew $6.6 million. Pay-TV declined $4.3 million year to date, partly offset by IPTV growth.
- Management expects 2023 capital expenditures of approximately $15 million, funded from existing cash. Management states available cash should support operations, capex, taxes and other needs for at least 12 months from the financial-statement issuance date; it cautions that poor results, unexpected expenses or investments could require financing sooner.
- No revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the filing. Management says results for the nine months are not necessarily indicative of full-year or future results.
- Operating cash outflow worsened to $20.6 million from $11.3 million in the prior-year period. Management attributes the 2023 outflow principally to the net loss and changes in operating assets and liabilities, partly offset by noncash amortization and stock compensation.
- Risks include dependence on royalty and advertising revenue, customer and end-user adoption, Pay-TV subscriber trends, licensee reporting and payment compliance, product demand and economic conditions. The filing notes potential advertising and entertainment spending impacts from industry strikes. Foreign exchange movements also affected results; the company uses forward contracts to hedge some currency exposure.
- The company recorded $1.1 million of long-lived asset impairment in the first nine months due to office footprint changes and subleasing conditions; additional lease-asset impairment in 2023 was possible. It also disclosed $87.4 million of future unconditional purchase obligations and up to $5.3 million of potential milestone-based payments. Litigation and IP claims could have material effects in the period recognized, although management did not anticipate a material adverse effect on overall results, financial position or liquidity.
- Management reported effective disclosure controls. A new ERP system was implemented in July 2023, with some internal controls replaced or modified. The cover page marks “No” for having filed all required reports during the preceding 12 months; investors may wish to verify the filing-status context.
