Revenue fell primarily because lower natural-gas commodity costs flowed through to lower gas revenues, and gas deliveries declined in warmer weather. Gas revenue decreased $24.8 million; electric revenue decreased $1.1 million. Lower fuel and purchased-power expenses helped support operating income and earnings. The effective tax rate declined to 7.7% from 18.0%, with renewable-energy credits and other tax items contributing.
At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $16.7 million and total current assets were $221.7 million, against current liabilities of $139.7 million (current ratio about 1.59). Debt comprised $717.6 million of long-term debt, $5.2 million due within one year, and $41.0 million of short-term debt; total debt was approximately $763.8 million. Long-term debt fair value was $662.1 million versus carrying amount of $727.3 million, including current maturities. Equity was $1,158.8 million. Management stated it expects adequate liquidity for operations and capital spending over the next 12 months.
Changes, outlook, and material matters
- Weather and demand: Heating degree days were down about 6.6% year over year. Gas deliveries fell 7.1%, while electric retail sales were nearly flat, down 0.3%. Management attributed lower gas earnings to warmer-than-normal weather; electric earnings benefited from investment growth and lower fuel costs.
- Rates: PSCW-approved 2024 increases were 1.54% for electric and 2.44% for gas. Approved 2025 increases are 4.17% for electric and 1.32% for gas. The 2024/2025 order authorizes a 9.7% ROE and requires customer refunds under an earnings-sharing mechanism when earnings exceed specified thresholds.
- Investment and transition: Q1 capital expenditures were $44.8 million, including $41.5 million of utility expenditures. Management reported no expected material change to the 2024–2028 capital expenditure forecast in the 2023 annual report. Priorities include renewables, grid modernization, and reducing carbon emissions 80% by 2030 from 2005 levels. MGE plans to retire Columbia Units 1 and 2 by June 2026 and expects the Elm Road Units to stop using coal as a primary fuel by 2030 and transition fully away from coal by 2032.
- Projects: MGE’s 10% share of Paris solar/battery project costs was estimated at $61 million, with $35.7 million incurred; Darien solar costs were estimated at $48 million, with $29.5 million incurred. Estimates are above previously approved certificate-of-authority levels, and MGE expects to seek recovery in future rate proceedings. Paris solar operation is estimated for 2024 and battery operation for 2025; Darien is estimated for 2024.
- Contingencies and regulatory uncertainty: Columbia’s $119.5 million net book value was classified as plant to be retired; early retirement was considered probable, but no impairment was recorded. Environmental rules and pending evaluations could add costs, particularly for fossil-fuel generation. Solar procurement restrictions and potential tariffs could delay projects or increase costs. Environmental groups’ court petitions challenge customer fixed charges in rate decisions; the rate revenue requirements are not challenged. ATC ROE litigation could reduce future equity earnings or distributions; the filing reports no material change to market risks.
- Fuel and other unusual items: MGE had $7.2 million of 2023 electric fuel savings subject to PSCW review and proposed customer refunds from October through December 2024. Cash from operations benefited from lower fuel and gas payments, partly offset by lower customer collections tied to reduced gas costs. No impairment was recorded for Columbia, and ordinary-course legal matters were not considered material.
The filing provides no specific earnings or EPS guidance. Management’s stated liquidity outlook and capital plans are forward-looking and subject to regulatory, operating, weather, commodity-price, interest-rate, and environmental risks.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether the decline in gas revenue and deliveries reflects weather and lower pass-through commodity costs, and how demand develops in subsequent quarters.
- Progress, final costs, schedules, and regulatory recovery for Paris, Darien, and other planned generation and grid projects.
- Columbia retirement timing and recoverability of its remaining book value; implications of Elm Road’s planned fuel transition and applicable environmental rules.
- Outcomes of the fixed-charge rate litigation, future rate recovery, earnings-sharing provisions, and the PSCW review of 2023 fuel savings.
- ATC ROE proceedings and any effect on MGE Energy’s investment earnings, distributions, or potential refund exposure.
- Liquidity and borrowing needs as capital spending continues; reported cash from operations less capital expenditures is a simple measure and does not represent company-defined free cash flow.
