Stacks Announces 2026 Roadmap Targeting Bitcoin-Native Finance for Institutions and Retail

New York, United States, April 30th, 2026, Chainwire

Following six network upgrades in six months, Stacks has published a 2026 roadmap outlining its plan to build a self-custodial financial system on Bitcoin — one where holders can earn yield, borrow, and transact without giving up custody or trust assumptions.

Stacks is building a financial system on top of Bitcoin, and it wants holders to earn yield on their BTC without ever giving up custody. The project outlined that vision Thursday in its 2026 roadmap , backed by six network upgrades shipped over the past six months — including a 30x boost to DeFi capacity — and a four-part community workshop series that shaped its priorities.

Strategy

The central thesis of the roadmap is that Bitcoin holders should be able to put their capital to work — staking, borrowing, and transacting without ceding custody or relying on trust assumptions beyond Bitcoin itself.

“Stacks will drive Bitcoin growth by building Bitcoin-native finance where both individuals and institutions come to grow and manage their Bitcoin. Stacks builds tools, products, and services that extend the capabilities of Bitcoin without compromising Bitcoin’s fundamental values and security,” said Muneeb Ali, Founder of Stacks.

Three Concurrent Development Phases

The roadmap organizes ongoing work across three phases, each designed to reinforce the others. Preparatory work for all three phases is active simultaneously — the phasing reflects the sequencing of major outcomes, not the start of development effort.

Phase 1 Anchor Capital

Establishes the economic foundation. Self-custodial yield gives Bitcoin holders a compelling reason to bring long-term capital on-chain.

Phase 2 Scale Infrastructure

With capital anchored, core performance upgrades prepare the network for real DeFi volume and AI agent activity at scale.

100x throughput via Clarity WASM Continuous core improvements sBTC bridge optimization

Phase 3 Bitcoin-Native Finance

With proven infrastructure and real liquidity, a financial economy native to Bitcoin expands naturally. Lending, trading, perpetuals, programmable capital, all downstream of a thriving, capital-rich base.

Bitcoin Staking as Entry Point

Bitcoin Staking on Stacks is designed to require no custody trade-off and no DeFi expertise from Bitcoin holders. Participants stake directly from Bitcoin L1, earn yield against their existing position, and retain full control of their assets throughout the process. Bitcoin Staking is positioned as the top-of-funnel product for the Stacks ecosystem, opening a path to a broader set of use cases including self-custodial loans, DeFi products, programmable capital, and AI-agent-managed portfolios.

Success Criteria

The roadmap benchmarks success across six criteria: native BTC yield, healthy DeFi, Bitcoin-grade safety, deep liquidity, fast and scalable transactions, and compliance-ready privacy.

Core Technical Priorities

Performance and Scaling

The primary scaling goal is a 100x throughput increase via Clarity WASM. Additional work targets sBTC bridge optimization, continued chainstate reduction, and AI/agent infrastructure designed to support up to 10,000 active agents on-chain.

Security

Stacks Labs plans to expand investment in sBTC and core security, including ongoing development of AI-powered testing suites.

Developer Tools

Planned improvements span the Clarinet and Clarity toolchain, the Stacks.js library, and the Stacks Extended API and Chainhooks infrastructure. The Stacks Mesh API will be added to support exchanges integrating Bitcoin Staking.

Ecosystem and Partner Integration

The roadmap outlines hands-on integration support for tier-1 custody providers and infrastructure partners. Leather Wallet is identified as a critical gateway product, with 2026 partnership work covering native Bitcoin Staking support, multi-signature functionality, improved Ledger hardware wallet integration, and general UX improvements.

Fee abstraction — enabling sBTC to be used for transaction fees in place of STX — is listed as a feasibility evaluation for the year. Passkey and WebAuthn support for wallet creation is described as ongoing work with contributions from Degen Labs and the Stacks Foundation.

About Stacks

Stacks is the home for Bitcoin-native finance. It extends Bitcoin with smart contracts and applications that read Bitcoin's state directly, so holders can put their capital to work without leaving Bitcoin. The network has distributed over $500 million in BTC rewards since launch and is the first Bitcoin layer in Circle's USDC Reserve program. Bitcoin Staking, arriving in 2026, introduces the first institutional-grade self-custodial Bitcoin yield product. Learn more at stacks.co .
