Is Super Micro Stock Underperforming the Nasdaq?

San Jose, California-based Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI) develops and manufactures advanced server and storage solutions built on a modular and open architecture. Valued at $26.4 billion by market cap, the company offers servers, storage systems, motherboards, full racks, chassis, and accessories worldwide.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as “large-cap stocks,” and SMCI definitely fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size, influence, and dominance in the computer hardware industry. SMCI excels in delivering customized modular solutions thanks to its innovative and open-standard architecture. Its adaptable product portfolio spans servers, storage, networking devices, and software, giving the company a competitive edge and strong market positioning.

Despite its notable strength, SMCI slipped 32% from its 52-week high of $58.78, achieved on Oct. 9, 2025. Over the past three months, SMCI stock declined 2.6%, underperforming the Nasdaq Composite’s ($NASX2.5% gains during the same time frame.

Shares of SMCI rose 35.2% on a YTD basis, outperforming NASX’s 13.3% gains over the same time frame. However, in the longer term, the stock dipped 7.8% over the past 52 weeks, underperforming NASX’s 20.3% returns over the same time frame.

To confirm the bullish trend, SMCI has been trading above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since early August.

SMCI has underperformed due to severe gross margin compression, intense industry competition, and lingering governance and regulatory scrutiny. While top-line demand for its AI server infrastructure has remained robust, heavy pricing pressure from NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) component costs, competitive discounting, and high initial setup costs for next-generation platforms eroded gross margins dropping into single digits. Investor confidence was further rattled by corporate governance challenges, including past accounting filing delays, regulatory probes, and customer concentration risks highlighted by order cancellations from key hyperscalers like Oracle Corporation (ORCL). These margin squeezes and execution hurdles have ultimately prevented rapid revenue growth from translating into proportional bottom-line gains.

In the competitive arena of computer hardware, Dell Technologies Inc. (DELL) has massively taken the lead over SMCI, showing resilience with a 343% uptick on a YTD basis and a 359.7% gain over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts are cautious on SMCI’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Hold” rating from the 20 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $41.38 suggests a notable potential upside of 3.6% from current price levels.
