Subscription Revenues & AI Investments Aid VRSK Amid High Debt

Verisk Analytics VRSK benefits from strong growth in its subscription-led revenue model. Focused investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and product innovation strategies collectively drive the company’s long-term growth outlook. Strong shareholder-friendly policies are an added advantage.

An elevated debt position limits scalability and financial flexibility. Rising personnel expenses could strain margins.

How Is VRSK Faring?

Subscription Revenues Lead Overall Growth: Verisk Analytics’ subscription revenues represented 83% of total revenues in the second quarter of 2026, up from 82% in the prior-year period. The company has been increasing prices during contract renewals, supported by AI and data-driven product enhancements, which helped increase annualized recurring revenues and reinforced the transition from transaction-based sales to subscriptions. This model benefits VRSK by supporting revenue visibility and providing a more stable foundation for long-term growth.

Product Innovations & Investments in AI Drive Prospects: VRSK is investing in proprietary datasets, AI and cloud-based platforms to deepen its role in insurer workflows. VRSK launched insurance data connectors with Anthropic during the second quarter of 2026 for underwriting and claims, also maintaining governance protections by keeping client data within the client session. The company released seven Core Lines Reimagine modules in the second quarter of 2026 and remains on track for 25 modules in 2026. These initiatives support renewal pricing, broaden use cases across underwriting and claims and strengthen VRSK's position.

Consistent Dividend & Share Buybacks: VRSK has maintained shareholder returns while funding strategic investment. It returned $2.8 billion, $1 billion and $624 million through share repurchases in 2023, 2024 and 2025, while paying dividends of $196.8 million, $221.3 million and $251.3 million, respectively. These shareholder-friendly actions generate value for investors seeking gains from share price appreciation and dividends.

High Debt Limits Financial Flexibility: Verisk Analytics has accumulated significant debt due to past buyouts, capital allocation decisions and efforts to expand its business. The company had a total debt of $4.47 billion, including $4.22 billion of long-term debt and $257.7 million of short-term debt at the end of the second quarter of 2026. Net interest expense rose to $52.8 million in the second quarter of 2026 from $35.5 million in the prior-year quarter. For the first half of 2026, net interest expense increased to $96 million from $71.8 million. This can limit financial flexibility if growth slows or acquisition opportunities increase.

Staffing Costs Pressure Bottom Line: VRSK’s personnel expenses, which include salaries, benefits, incentive compensation, equity compensation costs, sales commissions, employment taxes, recruiting costs, and outsourced temporary agency costs, are a major component of both cost of revenues and selling, general, and administrative expenses. They represented nearly 56% and 55% of the total operating expenses for 2024 and 2025, respectively. In the second quarter of 2026, cost of revenues increased 1.7% year over year, driven partly by higher personnel, benefits and IT/data costs. Selling, general & administrative costs rose 20.8% year over year, reflecting legal fees, advisory costs and acquisition-related expenses. Ever-rising employee salaries and wage expenses can significantly pressure VRSK's bottom line in the future.
