Is It Wise to Retain Crown Castle Stock in Your Portfolio Right Now?

Crown Castle CCI is poised to benefit from rising mobile data demand and future spectrum deployments. The Fiber Solutions and Small Cell divestiture also strengthened its financial position by reducing debt.

However, its heavy reliance on three major carriers, DISH and Sprint-related revenue losses, uncertainty surrounding DISH recoveries and elevated debt obligations remain key concerns.

What’s Supporting Crown Castle?

Rising mobile data usage, future spectrum deployment and network densification are likely to continue supporting demand for Crown Castle’s roughly 40,000 U.S. towers. In the second quarter of 2026, organic growth, excluding DISH Terminations and Sprint Cancellations, was 3.9%. Management expects 2026 to mark the low point for organic growth.

It cited contracted activity under existing agreements, additional spectrum deployment, continued mobile data growth and emerging edge-compute opportunities as potential growth drivers. Site rental billings are guided to $3.805-$3.835 billion and site rental revenues to $3.833-$3.878 billion for 2026, even as DISH and Sprint terminations remain a sizable offset.

Crown Castle’s tower model is built on long-term tenant contracts that generate recurring site rental cash flows with contractual escalators. As of June 30, 2026, remaining contracted tenant receivables were approximately $26 billion, while the weighted-average remaining tenant contract term was about five years.

More than 90% of full-year 2026 organic growth, excluding DISH Terminations and Sprint Cancellations, was contracted by the end of the second quarter, up from about 80% at the start of the year.

Crown Castle completed the Fiber Solutions and Small Cell sale on May 1, 2026, receiving about $8.4 billion in net proceeds. In the second quarter of 2026, the company completed $1.0 billion of share repurchases at an average price of $88.66 and repaid more than $7 billion of debt. As of June 30, 2026, net debt was equal to 6.3 times last-quarter annualized Adjusted EBITDA, within management’s 6.0-6.5 times target range. All debt was fixed rate at quarter-end, with a 3.7% weighted-average interest rate, while the revolving facility had about $4.5 billion of availability.

What’s Hurting Crown Castle?

Crown Castle remains reliant on a few national carriers. As of June 30, 2026, T-Mobile TMUS, AT&T T and Verizon VZ accounted for 42%, 28% and 23%, respectively, of second-quarter 2026 last-quarter-annualized site rental revenues. Management noted some pullback in services activity across all three mobile network operators (MNOs) during the second quarter, though 2026 core leasing guidance remained unchanged at $60-$70 million. This high concentration among TMUS, T and VZ leaves future growth sensitive to carrier spending decisions.

DISH Terminations are expected to reduce full-year 2026 site rental billings by $220 million, with Sprint Cancellations adding another $20 million reduction. DISH Wireless has filed for bankruptcy, and Crown Castle is pursuing more than $3.5 billion in contractual claims. The FCC-mandated $2.4 billion trust provides a potential additional source of recovery, but the timing and amount remain uncertain.

Post-sale debt repayment materially reduced Crown Castle’s leverage, but the balance sheet still carries substantial obligations. As of June 30, 2026, net debt was $17.1 billion, representing 6.3 times last-quarter annualized Adjusted EBITDA. All outstanding debt was fixed-rate at quarter-end, limiting near-term interest rate sensitivity. However, the company still faces a broad maturity schedule and ongoing refinancing needs over time.
