  • Q2 revenue declined 6% year over year; first-half revenue declined 8%. Product revenue fell 16% in Q2 and 20% in the first half, while services revenue grew 4% in both periods.
  • Q2 gross margin was 71.1%, compared with 65.4% a year earlier; operating margin was approximately 19.5%, compared with 16.9%. For the first half, gross margin was 70.3% versus 65.5%, while operating income declined to $482 million from $537 million.
  • Q2 Hybrid Cloud revenue was $1,408 million and Public Cloud revenue was $154 million. Public Cloud revenue grew 8% in Q2 and 12% in the first half; Hybrid Cloud product revenue weakened.
  • Net income comparisons are strongly affected by the prior-year period’s $524 million discrete tax benefit from an intra-entity intellectual-property transfer. The six-month effective tax rate was 23.8%, versus negative 67.7% a year earlier.
  • First-half operating cash flow increased to $588 million from $495 million. Capital expenditures were $73 million. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled $2.62 billion at quarter-end, down from $3.07 billion at fiscal year-end.
  • Debt principal was $2.4 billion, including $400 million of notes due September 2024, classified as current. NetApp had no commercial paper outstanding and had not drawn on its $1.0 billion revolving credit facility. Cash and investments exceeded principal debt by $220 million.
  • Net working capital was $0.3 billion, down $953 million from April 28, 2023. Deferred revenue and financed unearned services revenue totaled $4.0 billion, down from $4.3 billion.

Changes, outlook and risks

  • Management attributed weaker product demand to customer budget scrutiny, cloud optimization, smaller deal sizes, longer sales cycles and deal delays. Supply-chain conditions improved, lowering component and freight costs and supporting product gross margins.
  • Operating cash flow benefited from non-cash depreciation and stock compensation and lower accounts receivable; deferred revenue declined $241 million, primarily due to seasonal support-contract renewals.
  • No full-year revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the supplied filing text. NetApp expects fiscal 2024 remaining-period capital expenditures of $85 million to $135 million and says available liquidity and expected cash generation should meet needs for at least 12 months and thereafter for the foreseeable future.
  • During the first half, the company repurchased $700 million of stock and paid $209 million in dividends. It declared a further $0.50-per-share dividend payable January 24, 2024. Remaining repurchase authorization was $702 million.
  • A restructuring plan reduced the global workforce by approximately 1% and included lease terminations; first-half charges were $31 million, and workforce actions were substantially complete.
  • Risks include persistent macroeconomic weakness and demand delays, foreign-exchange and interest-rate exposure, tax audits and uncertainty, and patent litigation. Management recorded no material legal accrual; an adverse ruling could nevertheless entail damages, licensing costs, redesigns or sales restrictions.
  • NetApp had approximately $0.4 billion of non-cancelable inventory purchase commitments and $0.3 billion of other purchase obligations. It also reported $223 million of gross unrecognized tax benefits; the filing says the possible 12-month range of changes cannot be estimated.

Investor verification points

  • Assess whether product demand stabilizes and whether services and Public Cloud growth can offset continued product weakness.
  • Review the sustainability of improved product margins as supply-chain costs and product mix change, alongside rising services costs and operating expenses relative to revenue.
  • Separate underlying earnings from the prior-year $524 million tax benefit and monitor the realizability of the related deferred tax asset and ongoing tax audits.
  • Track cash conversion, seasonal deferred-revenue movements, the September 2024 note maturity, and cash held by foreign subsidiaries.
  • Monitor the cash impact of buybacks, dividends, purchase commitments, restructuring and any developments in patent litigation.
