Dear Microsoft Stock Fans, Mark Your Calendars for September 24

Every so often, a date on the calendar quietly becomes bigger than initial expectations. Sept. 24 could be one of those days for Microsoft (MSFT) investors.

It is not an earnings date or a product launch. Yet, what happens in Washington that evening could say a lot about where Microsoft, and the entire AI race, is headed next. Before I get to why this dinner matters for Microsoft stock, it helps to understand where the company stands right now and why its seat at this table is no coincidence.

Microsoft Stock Rides a Record AI-Driven Year

Microsoft just closed out fiscal 2026 (ended in June) with annual revenue topping $331 billion, up 18%. Cloud surpassed $214 billion in sales, growing 27%, while Azure crossed the $100 billion mark with 41% growth for the year, according to remarks CEO Satya Nadella made during the fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call.

Azure grew 43% in the most recent quarter, and CFO Amy Hood told investors on the call that demand continues to exceed available supply, even as it works to bring new data center capacity online at an accelerated pace.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is also scaling fast. Paid seats crossed 30 million, with net new seat additions more than doubling from the prior quarter. Nadella described Copilot's evolution from a simple chat tool into something closer to an everyday operating system for work, wired into a company's security, finance, and business processes.

Underneath it all sits a theme Nadella has repeated often this year: AI sovereignty. Companies and countries alike want control over their own data, models, and intellectual property, rather than handing it over to a single outside provider.

The idea has shaped Microsoft's approach to everything from its new partnership bringing Mistral models to Microsoft Sovereign Cloud to its support of more than 11,000 models across the Azure platform.

Investors Eye the Xi Dinner

Nadella plans to attend a White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping, joining a lineup of leaders from Apple (AAPL), OpenAI, and Nvidia (NVDA), according to a person familiar with the planning cited by Bloomberg. Microsoft declined to comment on the matter.

The guest list reads like a who's who of American technology. Amazon (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, and Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) chief Sundar Pichai are expected to attend, U.S. officials said.

Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Qualcomm (QCOM) head Cristiano Amon are also set to be there. OpenAI President Greg Brockman will join alongside CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI confirmed Monday. CNBC reported additional names on the U.S. side, including Citigroup (C) CEO Jane Fraser and Dell (DELL) founder Michael Dell, citing a source familiar with the planning.

From China, executives from BYD (BYDDY), Xiaomi (XIACY), CATL, Gotion, Hisense, Wanxiang, Bank of China, and COFCO Group were under consideration to join Xi, Reuters reported, citing sources.

The summit comes amid a heated industry debate over how fast AI should move. Just last week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for an industry-wide slowdown in AI development, warning of risks including large-scale cyberattacks, Bloomberg reported.

The Trump administration has pushed back on that idea, arguing that slowing down would hand China an advantage. China's government has criticized Amodei's comments as well, calling them fear-mongering.

What It Means for MSFT Stock Going Forward

For Microsoft, a seat at this dinner puts Nadella directly in the conversation shaping AI policy, trade, and competition between the world's two largest economies, at a moment when his company is betting big on sovereignty, model diversity, and trust as the foundation of its next decade of growth.

Nadella has spoken openly about wanting every enterprise, and by extension every nation, to control its own continuous learning loop rather than outsourcing its intellectual property to any single provider.

A dinner table that includes both American tech leaders and Chinese business figures is, in many ways, a real-world test of that exact philosophy playing out on the world stage. Investors watching Microsoft stock price action into the end of September may find the headlines from that evening just as telling as the next earnings report.

Out of the 51 analysts covering MSFT stock, 41 recommend “Strong Buy,” six recommend “Moderate Buy,” and four recommend “Hold.” The average MSFT price target is $562.33, above the current price of about $502.
