Is CRH Stock Underperforming the Nasdaq?

With a market cap. of $56.7 billion, CRH plc (CRH) is a leading global provider of building materials, employing thousands of people across thousands of operating locations worldwide. The company supports major construction projects through its broad geographic reach, diverse portfolio, scale, and innovative capabilities. 

Companies valued more than $10 billion are generally considered “large-cap” stocks, and CRH fits this criterion perfectly. CRH helps enable infrastructure development and modernization through materials and solutions across aggregates, cementitious products, roads, and water.

Shares of the Dublin, Ireland-based company have decreased 36.1% from its 52-week high of $131.55. Over the past three months, its shares have fallen 24.8%, lagging behind the broader Nasdaq Composite’s ($NASX) 5.1% gain during the same period.

CRH stock is down 32.5% on a YTD basis, underperforming NASX's 15.2% increase. Moreover, shares of the building material company have decreased 25.2% over the past 52 weeks, compared to NASX’s 19% return over the same time frame.

The stock has been trading below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since mid-January.

CRH has underperformed mainly due to weaker construction sentiment, higher interest rates, and concerns over a slowdown in housing and construction activity. 

In comparison, rival Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) has shown a less pronounced decline than CRH stock. VMC stock has fallen 14.4% on a YTD basis and 16.9% over the past 52 weeks.

Despite the stock’s weak performance over the past year, analysts remain bullish about its prospects. CRH stock has a consensus rating of “Strong Buy” from 21 analysts in coverage, and the mean price target of $133.22 is a premium of 58.9% to current levels.
