Can Archer's Redundant Propulsion Design Support Aircraft Safety?

Archer Aviation Inc. ACHR is developing its Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft with a design focused on safety and reliability. The aircraft uses a proprietary 12-tilt-6 distributed electric propulsion platform and is designed to carry four passengers and a pilot. Its propulsion architecture combines multiple electric motors with a simpler system design than traditional helicopters.

A key feature of Midnight is its use of redundant electric motors. This design aims to reduce potential failure points and support reliable aircraft operation. Rather than relying on a single central propulsion system, the aircraft distributes propulsion across multiple units, an approach intended to strengthen its safety architecture.

Archer has also developed key technologies in-house, including electric propulsion and flight control systems, while incorporating components from aerospace suppliers, some of which are already used on certified aircraft. This approach is intended to reduce certification risk, development time and cost. The company continues to conduct flight-test campaigns to evaluate aircraft performance and collect safety-critical data for the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification process.

Safety and reliability will remain important as Archer works toward commercial air-taxi operations. Midnight’s distributed propulsion design and ongoing flight testing are central to the company’s effort to meet the performance and safety requirements of passenger aviation. However, the aircraft must still demonstrate that it meets applicable certification requirements before commercial passenger operations can begin.

Companies Developing Redundant Electric Propulsion Systems

The focus on safety and reliability is encouraging eVTOL companies to incorporate redundant propulsion and control systems into their aircraft designs. Joby Aviation, Inc. JOBY and BETA Technologies, Inc. BETA are also developing electric aviation technologies with features intended to support reliable operations.

Joby Aviation’s aircraft uses six electric propellers, multiple battery packs and redundant flight-control systems designed to support safe operation.

BETA Technologies develops electric propulsion systems and flight-control technologies, including multiple flight-control computers designed to support continued operation in the event of a system failure.
